I would like to try the ling trip, but I have never fished for ling. Are rods/reels/line that work for fluke good for ling? How deep do you fish? Do you use jigs or bait? etc, etc.
Can anyone recommend a good source for info?

Thanks,

Mr. Limpett

Ling use to be a by catch while you were out for cod blackfish etc. the eat mostly anything clams, gulp, squid, crabs. fluke setup will be fine there not a huge fish. The can be in all water depths but usually find better concentrations in deeper water on wrecks and such. They are sometimes referd to as S@#$ bellies and youll find out why once you catch one, good tasting fish. hope that helps

You will need a rod and reel capable of handling 8 to 12 ozs. of lead depending on the depth and the current. We wished in 130 feet of water, but there are much deeper spots in the Mudhole. As far as bait, we used nothing but gulp on the hooks most of the day when I fished with Captain Chad on 6/29 and it was "stupid" fishing for the ling. Average size was 2 to 4 pounds with a few bigger ones also. It seems the clams were attracting the conger eels as well as catching the ling.

As BigAl said, they are a great tasting fish but sometimes do not freeze that well.  I have started cooking mine before freezing them and have had no problems.

Tight Lines,

PS: I used a Penn jigmaster on the "STICK" when I fished.  TT^ nts
