Went fluking 9/5. Caught 10 fluke and as well as other various species. Although 5 fluke were over the 17" NJ minimum, we wound up keeping only 3 because 2 that were both around the 18" mark had round orange/purple bruise looking marks on their white side. On one of those, the white side appeared to actually be turning a yellow or orange color especially around the fins. Also there was what appeared to be an algae bloom in the Keansburg area.
Has anyone encountered this?>>>CH

Okay, so nobody else has ever seen this???

Chawk, I have seen fish with bite marks out of them and then the heal marks. Some of there fish were bruised where they were bitten. Is this similar to what you saw? If so, not uncommon and I usually cut that part out of the fillet just to make it look more appetizing. TT^

Capt. Joe, no, these were not bite marks. In the middle of the body, they had about inch and a half, round yellowish purple marks. The one that had multiple marks, also had a yellow tinge on its underside.
I almost always have a camera aboard, but I did not have it that day. I had seen this once before. But since it was only one fish, one time I thought little of it. But two out of 10 is somethinge else.>>>CH

The marks sound like a blunt injury ???. I was unable to match a disease to the description.
The yellow belly is interesting. Fluke are masters of camo but that is on the topside.

maybe it was the type of bottom that they were in that caused it.... i had fluke that had something on it that looked like this o= round thing with 2 things off it really weird looking..no bigger than half a pencil eraser.
