Bivalves such as clams, oysters and mussels are filter feeders that can accumulate harmful bacteria carried into waterways by stormwater. The DEP must wait seven consecutive days for the shellfish to purge themselves of the bacteria, she said. After seven days, the DEP collects samples of the shellfish for tissue tests, and if bacteria are within the acceptable levels, the shellfish area may be reopened. fcp
