Post by: Reckless on January 30, 2013, 08:42:44 PM
Doesn't make sense to me to put it right next to the old one. 5hrug

I guess they want to build the new one then upgrade the old one. Why so close to the old one? I don't see where that will do much for traffic. Someone should start a ferry service from Barnegat to Barnegat Light.

Not so sure it's to ease traffic as much as it is to have access to and from the island at all times in case there is a problem with one of the bridges. With two they can shut one bridge entirely and maintain two way traffic on the bridge that remains open.

Original outline a few years back talked of one bridge handling mid island south and the other north to relieve Ship Bottom traffic. In an emergency all lanes from both exit off Island. Don't know if they will follow original plan, but those who do venture onto LBI during summer season would know what traffic relief this would bring.

lived/worked on LBI for a number of years. worked in surf city and brant beach while living in ship bottom.  Extra bridge ain't gonna do much when the renters turn over on a saturday and everyone is heading in the same direction with only two lanes and one direction to go.  still need to go through that "circle" or navigate a few 25mph streets to get to the bridge/s. It bottlenecks there.  Fine extra bridge BUT you still have two lanes with lights to get to the parkway/route nine.  IMHO you are "moving" the traffic jam for 350 million bucks.  Take that money and give it to people to repair there houses or place there houses up on stilts, repair/upgrade the docks, clean up the bay so we can actually fish there, improve the inlet. So many other things to do that build a bridge.  just my two cents.
