Title: Corroded gunnel mounts
Post by: Reel Time on February 09, 2013, 09:03:06 PM
Picked up a set of used lee's outriggers, with perko gunnel mounts last week.

The outriggers are good to go, but the mounts leave a wee bit to desire. The chrome is pitted on both, and one is worse than the other.

What are my options? clean'em up best I can and deal with it for the 30 bucks I paid for them? Try and find somewhere to rechrome them? Try and paint them some marine white or something, maybe a powder coat?

Are the brass on the inside? Is it the holder thats bad or the mount that goes in the boat could you post a picture.

What size are the outrigger polls in the base diameter?  My uncle has a pair of bases that are solid brass and was selling them for $100 for the pair which are still marked Port & Starboard as there is a difference when mounting them.  If you have a picture of what you need that would be helpful as well.

I' at work today, so pics will have to wait till this evening.

I believe they are chrome plated brass, perko's.  I'll try and get a number off them and look them up.

The biggest part of the price for rechroming is prepping the parts to be done. If you know someone with a bead blaster that would save you some money. Powder coating is a nice option. t^

Okay, what i have are the Perko 1314's which turn out to be chrome plated zinc alloy,,, I think, maybe  5hrug

been pondering the powder coating and thinking it may make the holder to small of a diameter for the pole holder to go into it, which is 1.25".

fcp  did they come with the backing plate 5hrug and the tube?

No backing plate, came with two tubes.

Don't think the backing plates are required, poles are extremely light, maybe half of what yours weigh.

gunnel mounts are 1.25" ID, making the elbows 1.25" OD, with the outriggers themselves at 1 1/8" OD with the plastic sleeve on the end.

The ones we have are heavy duty plates and much wider that the ones you have.  Plus Rod is right there should be a backing plate.  The ones we have weigh about 5 pounds a piece.  If I find a picture I will post it.

I believe they are Lee's but I would have to check.  Brand new the holders without back plate go for around 900 dollars. and the back plates sell for around 80 dollars.  These are heavy weight units but I think they are 2" I would have to check if you are interested.  Like I mentioned before they are for sale for 100 or 120.

I would have to ask my uncle who is up in the Sayerville area.

Let me know.

After all the boats that went to scrap yards after Sandy I'm sure parts should be available online.

 Just thinking :headscra:
