Title: Sept 16-17 canyon report...
Post by: Duffman on September 18, 2007, 08:36:37 PM
Trip was up in air until the last minute due to the forecast being all over the place. Fri had it 2-4ft, Sat turned that around to 20 25knts and 7-9. Then Sunday morning changed the forecast yet again. Thanks NOAA.
Finally broke the inlet by 3:45PM and came tight on anchor by 7:30.  Real slow start as we didnt get any action until almost midnight. Fish came in spurts and we never really held them around the boat. Some action at midnight, again at 3 AM and again at daybreak. Daybreak had a quick shot of longfin that were in the slick for all of 10 seconds, but we did manage a few hookups with one landed around 40 lbs.
Not a slammer trip but fun nonetheless. there is NOTHING like being at the canyon!
Fished aboard the Cindy Sea III   Cant say enough about Capt Dave, Mate Rick and the boat. Great meeting these guys and Rick works his ass off.  The Cindy Sea is a tank. Seas were nasty on the way in and she felt solid as rock all the way.
Totaled 4 YFT to 70 lbs and the lone Longfin.  Strange bite as the tuna werent engulfing the bait, almost like they played with it before biting.  Tuna seemed to prefer frozen butters over live squid all night!!
Trolling a few hours after sun-up was fruitless as seas started to get wicked quick.  Last ditch effort drifting baits behind scallop boats didnt pan out either, although at this time the current was ripping and you couldnt peel line of the reel quick enough.
Good stuff, have another overnighter scheduled in 2 weeks. Hoping the weather is with me and the tuna follow!!!

Story on that.  Thats Andrew in the pic.  Fought the fish for 10 minutes or so and got it to the boat pretty green.  Just about to sink the gaff on the starboard corner and the leader pops at the swivel!  Mate turns to stern where the fish is just gliding under the transom, stabs at it sinks the gaff!  Collared and inthe box in 5 minutes. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good!!!!!!  t^
