Title: NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook: Memorial Day Weekend Edition
Post by: Pfishingruven on May 23, 2013, 09:22:54 PM: Here is the Outlook for Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday through Monday. Unfortunately, the weather pattern will be very unsettled and water conditions could be worse than the weather. Saturday into Saturday Night will bring the greatest chances of rain, showers and even a thunderstorm. This should be mostly scattered to isolated showers. Any rain and clouds will slowly clear out as the day progresses. Sunday and Monday will be clear with more sun than clouds. High temperatures will be in the low 60's on Saturday and then low to mid 70's on Sunday and Monday. Overnight lows will dip down into the upper 40's again and low 50's. Water conditions will vary by day and location. In general, though, Saturday and Sunday will have cautious to hazardous conditions with Small Craft Advisories from a strong northwesterly flow. Winds will be in the 20-25 knot range with gusts over 35 knots. Bays will see 2-5 foot seas with only 4 second period. Inshore waters could see 3-6 foot waves with only a 4 second period. Midshore to Offshore will see waves 5-7 feet at 5-7 seconds. The winds will be the major factor here. Winds may begin to diminish by Sunday Night, which will allow waters to lay down fairly quickly. By Monday winds should diminish to 10-15 knots out of the northwest and seas down to 1-2 feet at 8 seconds making water conditions good. Midshore to Offshore may see some residual into Monday Morning. If you are planning to get out this weekend, I wouldn't consider Saturday and Sunday a wash. This is all dependent on the timing and positioning of a Low off the coast. I would play it by ear and definitely check current conditions via buoy data and current forecasts the night before or even the morning of. I will keep an eye out for any major changes, as I know this is a big boating and fishing weekend. Water temperatures are holding about the same, maybe a couple of degrees warmer. Rivers and Bays are low to mid 60's. Inshore waters are in the upper 50's across the northern coastal areas and into the low 60's in some southern areas. Midshore to Offshore has moved into the mid to upper 50's. These temperatures may cool off some due to the cold front moving through. Surf conditions will be moderate to normal, with 2-4 feet through Sunday then decreasing 0-2 feet on Monday. The wind will be a factor Saturday and Sunday with 35 knot gusts out of the northwest.

The upcoming week will be more settled, so far. Rain chances will be very minimal with temperatures climbing to the upper 70's, maybe even 80's by the middle of the week. Lows will increase into the 50's and even 60's.

The cold front that passed through the area on Thursday Night and Friday will push off the coast. A low pressure system will develop on the front off the coast Friday and move very slowly northeast before it reaches the Canadian Maritimes on Monday. High pressure will then build in behind it.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, Paul! It really looks like Saturday and Sunday are going to be a blowout. You guys got hit with a ton of heavy rain today! Couple rivers at minor flood stage too.

Right now, by the numbers, it looks that way. While the models have lessened some on Saturdays seas, I am seeing Gale Force winds possible. NWS is talking about Gale Watches being posted tonight and Warnings up by Saturday Morning. Sunday may see sub SCA winds, but that could happen a any point between Saturday Night and Sunday Night, so the forecast for Sunday is still 15-20 knot winds with 25 knot gusts. Winds won't decrease until Sunday Night into Monday.

So, simply, there are no major changes to the forecast for this weekend.

Post by: Pfishingruven on May 25, 2013, 10:50:57 AM: The forecasts have been spot on for today, unfortunately! Started with some showers this morning and currently cloudy skies. Any remaining showers will end and become scattered or isolated throughout the day. Skies will slowly clear from south to north as the day moves on. Winds began picking up yesterday afternoon and have continued. Gale force gusts have been recorded at both northern and southern areas on land stations and marine buoys. These will continue to increase through the afternoon due to a decent pressure gradient from the Low Offshore and the High moving in from the Tennessee Valley. Most areas will see some degree of blowout tides, running 0.5-1 foot lower today. Areas on the Delaware area already seeing upwards of 2 feet lower. Depending on how quickly the clouds clear out, most areas will only see upper 50's, possibly into the low 60's with overnight lows dropping into the mid to upper 40's. Water conditions continue to be rated cautious to hazardous with Gale Warnings in effect. Sea heights look only to be around the 3-4 foot range with occasional higher waves at 4 seconds.

Tomorrow's forecast looks the same as reported, with slightly lowers winds, likely dropping below Gale force. Winds will still be 20-25 knots gusting to 30 knots with seas 3-5 feet at 4 seconds. Gale Warnings will be replaced by Small Craft Advisories. These conditions look slightly better than originally forecast. It is all dependent on the winds diminishing and when that happens. The waves are all from the winds, so if they lessen, the chop will subside rather quickly. Skies will be clear and sunny tomorrow with temperatures into the 70's, but lows back down into the 40's.

The week ahead looks good, with only chances of rain on Wednesday and a warming trend into the mid to upper 80's by the end of the week and lows pulling up into the 60's.

Always good to have a plan "B & C" (Beer and Cooking on the BBQ) chrz. Hope to head north out of Manasquan Inlet Monday morning, if the conditions permit, let's see what happens. Then again, there is always plan "D" (Drive to the beach and fish). WTF 5hrug

Post by: Pfishingruven on May 26, 2013, 10:59:28 AM: Clear sunny skies with dry conditions will continue with temperatures warming to the upper 60's or low 70's. Overnight lows back into the 40's again. Still a moderate northwest wind at 15-20 knots gusting to 25+ knots. Small Craft Advisories are in effect from Sandy Hook to Delaware including Raritan Bay and Delaware Bay/River. Currently seas are 3-4 feet and could see them 3-5 feet at 5 seconds and gusts to 27 knots today. As the Low moves northeast and the high gets into place, the pressure gradient will lessen as should these winds as the day moves on. Chance that SCA's will be dropped by 6PM today bringing winds and gusts below 20 knots and seas to 2 feet at 8 seconds. For some, this might be an opportunity?! Surf conditions are looking normal again with 2-3 foot waves, just that gusty west wind.

Monday is still looking good on all fields. It will be sunny and dry with winds subsiding. Highs will make it to the mid to upper 70's in most places and overnight lows will creep up into the upper 40's instead of the low to mid 40's. Water conditions look good for all locations with a WNW wind at around 10 knots and seas 1-2 feet at 9 seconds. Surf conditions will be normal, again 0-2 feet with a light west wind.

The rest of the week is looking good with a chance of rain Tuesday Night. High temperatures will warm during the week starting in the 70's and making it into the upper 80's by the end of the week. Lows will finally get out of the chilly 40's and make it into the 50's and 60's. Water conditions are looking good right now, but there is a chance of a Small Craft Advisory on Wednesday Evening or Thursday. I will have a full Week Outlook by tonight or tomorrow.
