Title: NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook: Week Edition June 10-14, 2013

A very unsettled weather pattern this week with a chance of rain and thunderstorms through Thursday Day.  Thursday Night should begin clearing out.  Friday will be dry and mostly sunny.  Rain this week could cause some flooding concerns, both flash and river flooding.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70's and mid 80's all week with lows only into the mid and low 60's.  Inshore there is a chance of Small Craft Advisories Monday and Tuesday with seas building to 5 feet.  Midshore to Offshore looks cautious most of the week with Small Craft Advisories except for Thursday.  Water surface temperatures are up a few degrees with most bays and rivers up to the low 70's and ocean temperatures in the mid 60's.  Surf conditions will be normal to moderate on Monday with seas 2-4 feet with a 15+ knot SE wind.  Tuesday through Thursday will have a predominantly west wind with 1-2 foot waves.  Friday could be elevated 1-3 feet with a NNE wind at 15 knots.                 

High pressure will move out overnight allowing Low pressure across the Mississippi Valley to move east toward the Ohio Valley and then down the St Lawrence Valley through the midweek.  The fronts associated with the Low will bring unsettled conditions early this week.  Weak high pressure will then build in for the end of the week.

The weekend, right now looks dry with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the 60's.  Water and surf conditions all look good as well.  Let's hope that holds true through the week.

Tropics are quiet right now.  There is a chance of severe weather across central portions of the US this week.

Already have a large area of rain with some pockets of heavy rain moving into the state this morning, as well as Flood Watches & Warnings posted.  Flood Warnings for Camden, Gloucester & Burlington Counties until 10:15 AM.  A Flood Watch has been issued for all 21 NJ Counties through tonight, in anticipation of rain and thunderstorms today.  Small Craft Advisories have also been issued through Tuesday Morning for all ocean waters from Long Island down to Delaware, but does not include Raritan Bay or Delaware Bay. Rain will continue throughout the day and into the night.  There could even be a thunderstorms as well.  Temperatures will be in the mid 70's with overnight lows in the mid to upper 60's with very humid air.  Water conditions have Small Craft Advisories and the threat of lightning today.  Surf conditions are moderate at 2-4 feet with a threat of lightning.

The SPC has just issued a Slight and Generalized Risk of severe weather today.  Conditions are possible for supercells to form ahead of the main squall line today.  The main threat today will be damaging winds and possible tornadoes.  Thunderstorms will take place near or ahead of a cold front pushing in from the west or near the warm front moving north.  Be weather aware today and stay safe!

* AT 106 PM EDT...THE COOPER RIVER AT HADDONFIELD WAS 2.7 FEET AND
  RISING. FLOOD STAGE AT HADDONFIELD IS 2.8 FEET. WITH ADDITIONAL
  RAIN MOVING INTO THE AREA...AND WITH THE GROUND ALREADY SATURATED
  FROM RAIN LATE LAST WEEK...THE COOPER RIVER IS EXPECTED TO EXCEED
  FLOOD STAGE THIS AFTERNOON. HEAVY RAIN ELSEWHERE IN THE
  AREA...FALLING AT THE RATE OF 2 INCHES PER HOURS...IS EXPECTED TO
  CAUSE URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE FLOODING LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

Here's is the updated risk of Severe Weather from the SPC.  Notice the increase in Tornado Risk across the state.  So, just because you are not in a Watch does not mean tornadoes are not possible.  This is a very similar setup to conditions that occur across the plains...a cold front meeting a rising warm front.  OK, not exactly the dry, cold front meeting fresh from the Gulf moist air, but similar enough.  Of course, tornadoes in NJ are not like those across the Plains, either.  The strongest tornado in NJ has been an EF3 with EF0, EF1, EF2 more common.  Remember is a Tornado Warning is issued, seek shelter in the lowest room of the building you are in or in an interior room without windows, when possible.

Keep and eye to the sky and have a way to get Warnings.  Be safe!

Storms are pushing through Philadelphia and Baltimore moving northeast at around 30-35 mph.  These storms will produce heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.  The risk for severe weather is still there and will continue likely past 10 PM as discussed by the SPC in a Mesoscale Discusiion.  Most storms will not move out until the overnight. The risk of flooding is still there as well.  Behind this next main line of storms will be scattered and isolated storms.  Be safe tonight!

The bulk of the rain has moved offshore.  The severe weather stayed just south of NJ with two possible tornadoes in Delaware yesterday, one causing some significant damage.  Today will be partly cloudy with a chance of scattered or isolated showers or thunderstorms.  There is still a cold front sitting to the west of the area and the warm front has lifted to the northern part of the state.  Highs in the upper 70's along/on the water and low to mid 80's inland with lows only into the mid 60's tonight.  Moderate to high humidity will continue.  There are still Flood Warnings for Ocean County, Burlington County & Morris County for minor river flooding.  Small Craft Advisories are in effect until 5 PM for Long Island through Delaware excluding Raritan Bay and Delaware Bay.  SW winds will continue at 15-20 knots with seas at 4-6 feet.  These conditions should improve over the day, with winds and seas subsiding by afternoon to late afternoon.  Surf conditions will be moderate with moderate risk of rip currents with SW winds 10-15 knots and waves around 4 feet.  UV Index is Very High at 8/10.

Tomorrow's forecast looks the same.  A chance of showers and thunderstorms all day, Inshore water conditions good, Midshore to Offshore water conditions cautious, surf conditions good.  Thursday now has a chance of severe weather across most of the state and showers have moved into the forecast for Friday.

Mostly sunny morning so far with some clouds moving in today.  South breeze around 5 knots with some gusts to 10 knots.  Low chance of scattered or isolated showers/thunderstorms today with chances increasing later in the evening into the overnight.  Highs in the mid 80's inland and mid to upper 70's along/on the water.  There is a Flood Warning still for Burlington County for the Rancocas Creek.  A Flood Watch has also been issued for Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington & Ocean Counties from Thursday Morning through Thursday Night.  Inshore water conditions are rated good, however S winds are pushing 15-20 knots with seas 3-4 feet at 8 seconds.  There is currently a Small Craft Advisory for New York Harbor/Raritan Bay through 6PM today with NW winds 15-20 knots, gusts to 25 knots and seas 1-2 feet.  Winds will switch to the east later today.  Midshore to Offshore has cautious conditions with Small Craft Advisories for NW winds to 25 knots and seas 5-6 feet at 8 seconds.  Surf conditions are moderate with moderate risk for rip currents.  W winds 10-15 knots and wave heights at 3 feet.

There is a chance of Severe Weather across the Upper Central US through the Mid Atlantic (see map).  Widespread damaging winds, hail, severe thunderstorms with heavy rains, dangerous lightning and tornadoes cannot be ruled out.  For Southern and Western NJ the main risk if going to be damaging winds and hail.  All of NJ should be alert to this today!

Our area has a Moderate Risk for Thursday.  I will have a complete Outlook on the Severe Weather coming up within next few hours.  I am just reviewing some data, models and forecasts.  Tomorrow is a day to be Weather Alert and not take your chances that the weatherman is wrong!

Severe warned storms have already moved through the state with damaging winds, hail, prolific dangerous lightning, and heavy rains causing flash flooding the state.  Any remaining rain will move out within the next hour or so.  Cloudy conditions with possible sun will return with highs into the upper 70's inland.  Scattered and/or isolated storms could pop up all day.  More scattered and organized storms will start in the afternoon anytime between 2 PM and into the overnight.  Storms could be strong or severe causing damaging winds, hail, possible tornadoes, dangerous lightning and heavy rains.  Depending on how much sun we get this afternoon will really depend on how unstable the atmosphere gets.  However, there is still a lot of wind shear forecast, so spin up storms could still happen.  This is more of a nowcast then a forecast.  Flood Watches and Warnings are likely due to River Flooding (http://www.erh.noaa.gov/marfc/) and flash flooding conditions.

Water conditions will be cautious to hazardous with Small Craft Advisories for all coastal waters and bays.  Some of the worst atmospheric conditions are forecast over coastal waters, so storms entering coastal waters could intensify rapidly!  Inshore waters will have SE winds around 25 knots with higher gusts and seas 4-6 feet at 6 seconds.    Midshore to Offshore will have SE winds to 30 knots and seas 6-8 feet at 6 seconds.  Winds and seas within thunderstorms will be higher than this.  Surf conditions are Moderate with moderate rip currents and wave heights 2-4 feet with SE winds to 25 knots and higher gusts.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and water conditions will be worse than today.  I will get around to updating tomorrows forecast later today!

So, here is the update for Friday.  Cloudy with a chance of showers earlier in the day.  Eventually clearing out by afternoon, once the Low is off to the northeast.  Then mostly sunny with highjavascript:void(0);s only into the 70's and an overnight low of mid to upper 50's with cooler temperatures along/on the water and in northwestern NJ.

Inshore water conditions will start off cautious to hazardous with NE/NNE winds to 30 knots and seas 5-6 feet.  As the low lifts northeast winds and seas will diminish to N at 5 knots and seas 5 feet at 8 seconds.  Winds make increase some, however seas will continue to diminish into the overnight and weekend.  Midshore to Offshore will be hazardous and then cautious with winds to 30+ knots and seas to 10 feet.  Conditions will take longer to improve in this area than inshore.  Both locations will have Small Craft Advisories, Inshore through later afternoon and Midshore to Offshore into the overnight or early Saturday.  This will also be the same for Raritan Bay and Delaware Bay, however seas will not make it much above 4 feet max.  Areas east of Sandy Hook along southern Long Island will continue Gale Warnings through most of the day before changing to SCA's.  Surf conditions will be moderate with moderate risk of rip current and some higher, rougher surf around 3-4 feet with NNE/NE winds averaging 15-20 knots with some gusts to 30 knots.  Again, these conditions will improve as the day progresses.

Friday Night and into the weekend through Sunday Evening look good right now, with some high pressure taking over.  I will have a full Weekend Outlook coming up.

Some scattered showers across most of the state.  These will move out within the next couple of hours and then mostly cloudy skies with some sun are possible through tonight.  A scattered or isolated shower or thunderstorm are possible during the afternoon into the evening.  Clouds will gradually clear into tonight.  The Low is east of New England already.  This is good as it will stop influencing our weather, winds and water conditions.  Highs will only get into the low 70's today with overnight lows into the mid 50's.  Water conditions are cautious across all coastal waters including New York Harbor, Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay into the Delaware River with Small Craft Advisories.  N/NW winds will approach 30 knots with seas 5-6 feet.  Surf is Moderate and elevated with moderate risk for rip currents with waves around 5 feet and NW winds at 25 knots.  These conditions should start clearing about  this afternoon.
