Title: NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Week Edition: Sept 23-27, 2013

There is not much to mention about the weather this first week of Fall.  Canadian High Pressure will dominate a very stable weather pattern bringing cooler and dry air through the weekend.  This will bring sunny skies with some partly cloudy skies towards the end of the week and dry conditions with no rain in the forecast over the next 5 to 7 days.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60’s for the beginning of the week, climbing to the low to mid 70’s by the mid to end of the week.  Overnight lows will range from the mid 30’s to mid 50’s.  Dew points will range from the 30’s to 50’s making humidity low and comfortable.  Water conditions are rated good for all locations all, but Monday Morning.  After gusty winds Monday Morning diminish by the afternoon and seas subside with an increasing period, winds will be light with normal seas the rest of the week.  Surf and beach conditions will be good with Low Risks of rip currents, light winds, calm surf and wave heights 1-3 feet.  Water temperatures are starting to cool!  Northern water temperatures are cooler than southern temperatures, but all waters are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index will be Moderate to High this week.
      
A nearly stationary Canadian High Pressure centered in the Upper Great Lakes will provide a northerly, cool and dry flow this week.  The High will eventually drift east over the Mid to North Atlantic States over the weekend.

The weekend will be a continuation of this week.  Sunny, dry, cooler temperatures with good water and surf/beach conditions.  By the start of next week, some instability will work it’s way back into the picture with some frontal boundaries and moisture moving into the region.

Good morning!  A brisk start to the day with chilly temperatures this morning in the 40’s and 50’s across most of the state.  Northwestern NJ saw some upper 30’s last night as Canadian High Pressure began moving into the region.  This will bring cooler and drier air for the next 5 to 7 days.  Skies are sunny with a few clouds mixed in.  They will remain clear tonight.  High temperatures today will be in the mid to upper 60’s.  Overnight lows will be a repeat of last night with mid to upper 40’s inland, low to mid 50’s along/on the water and upper 30’s to low 40’s across northern/northwestern areas.  Winds could breezy and cool today out of the north around 10 mph at times.  Dew points are low in the 40 and 50’s and will only move into the 40’s and 50’s today, keeping humidity low and comfortable.

Water conditions are cautious to good today.  Small Craft Advisories are still in effect from Sandy Hook to Delaware including Delaware Bay.  These will expire at 11AM.  There are still some gusty winds to 20 knots and seas to 4 feet at 5 seconds.  Winds will diminish some this afternoon and seas will subside with an increased period to 9 seconds.  Here are some local conditions for today.  Raritan Bay will have northwest winds 10-15 knots becoming 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet subsiding to 1 foot or less by tonight.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northwest winds around 10 knots becoming north around 7 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have north winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots this morning diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots this afternoon and then 10 knots tonight with seas 2-4 feet subsiding to 2-3 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have north winds 10-18 knots diminishing to north-northwest 9-13 knots this afternoon with seas  3 feet at 5 seconds for southern waters becoming 9 seconds in the afternoon and 9 seconds for northern waters all day.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have north-northwest/north winds 10-20 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots this afternoon with seas 3-4 feet at 5 seconds extending to 9 seconds this afternoon.

Surf and beach conditions look better than anticipated yesterday with Low to Moderate Risks of rip currents.  North winds will be 10-15 knots, surf will be normal to slightly rougher with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 3 foot east swell at 7 seconds.  Be careful in the waters still, as there is still a strong rip currents in areas.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index Moderate at 5/15.

Good morning!  Another chilly start with some frost across the northern part of the state.  Some overnight lows dropped to the freezing mark and below!  Clear skies and almost no wind last night allowed some areas to cool below forecast low temperatures.  Sunny skies with a few clouds mixed in today staying clear tonight.  Dry again, with no rain in the forecast.  High temperatures in the upper 60’s to mid 70’s.  Overnight lows in the mid 40’s to low 50’s inland and along/on the water with mid to upper 30’s across northern areas.  Another cool, light breeze today out of the northwest around 5-10 mph.  Humidity will be low again and comfortable.  Humidity will not be much of a problem any longer moving into Fall weather and cooler temperatures with drier air.

Water conditions are good for all locations, all day today.  Winds will be lighter out of the northwest, allowing seas to recover.  Here are forecasts for some local conditions.  Raritan Bay will have west winds becoming northwest tonight at 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have west-northwest winds becoming northwest at night and north after midnight with winds 5-10 knots and seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds becoming north tonight at 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have northwest winds at 7-14 knots becoming west-northwest/northwest winds this afternoon at 6-9 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 9 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have northwest/north-northwest winds at 8-13 knots becoming west-northwest this afternoon at 6-13knots with seas 2-4 feet at 9 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good with Low Risks of rip currents.  Winds will be northwest around 10 knots, normal surf with wave heights between 1-3 feet and a 3 foot east swell at 9 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  Despite a low risk of rip currents, still be cautious if you are in or near the water, low risk does not mean NO RISK!  UV Index is Moderate at 5/15.

Title: Re: Potential Coastal Storm This Weekend

This is not my fashion to discuss a storm that does not exist and has not trended on the models!  However, other irresponsible weather outlets have already begun talking about the potential and some of the comparisons are way over the top.

There is potential for a coastal storm this weekend anytime from Saturday through Monday, most likely between Saturday Night and Sunday Night.  Again, this storm does not exist right now and has only begun trending on the models.  In fact, the US Model did not even have this storm until this afternoon.  The models basically develop a Low that begins off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic.  This Low could be tropical or a hybrid type storm.  This is where agreement ends.  Some models bring the storm up the coast, others bring it up the coast, but well out to sea.  Of course, track and intensity cannot be even guessed upon at this time, without a system even there yet and without that there is no way to tell what effects NJ will experience.

What I will tell you is...DO NOT buy into the Sandy or Irene hype.  Could it become as strong or stronger...sure could, or it could be weaker or absolutely nothing at all.  At this point in time, I will not say, nor speculate and of course there are not any forecasts reflecting this event.  Each storm is unique and factors that were there with Irene were different than with Sandy and will be different with any subsequent storm.

So, from this point, it's a watching and waiting game, keeping this post in the back of your mind.  If a Low starts coming together somewhere in the Atlantic down around Florida, we know the models could be onto something and go from there.  Early formation would begin sometime Wednesday or Thursday and progress from there.

I will keep any updates within the weekly or weekend outlooks until it becomes a defined storm or threat.

Good morning!  Yet again, another chilly start with temperatures ranging from the 30’s to the 50’s this morning.  A mix of sun and clouds with more sun than clouds today.  Clouds will build in throughout the day into the overnight.  Dry again, with no rain in the forecast.  High temperatures in the low to mid 70’s.  Overnight lows in the upper 40’s to low 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and mid 40’s across northern areas.  Light winds/cool breeze today out of the north around 5 mph.

There is still the potential for a coastal storm this weekend, as the models have continued to trend this storm and some of the official forecasts are reflecting the potential.  More to come later today and tomorrow.

Water conditions are good for all locations today.  Winds will be light to moderate mainly out of the north/northeast, varying to east-northeast.  Here are some local conditions forecast.  Raritan Bay will have northeast winds 5-10 knots becoming east this afternoon then 5 knots tonight before shifting to the north after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have variable winds around 5 knots becoming east-northeast 5-10 knots by mid-morning then around 5 knots tonight before changing to the north with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have east winds 5-10 knots becoming northeast tonight with seas 1-2 feet building to 2-3 feet at night.  Inshore ocean waters will have varying winds from northeast/north-northeast/east-northeast at 5-13 knots with the higher winds this afternoon with seas 1-2 feet at 10 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have northeast/east-northeast winds 5-15 knots with seas 1-2 feet at 10 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good with Low Risks of rip currents.  Winds will be northeast around 10 knots with calm to normal surf, wave heights 1-2 feet with a 2 foot east swells (light) at 10 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index will be Moderate at 5/15.

The official forecast involving the coastal storm keeps it well off the coast, out at sea.  The only forecast effects for the area will be increased marine winds and seas and most of that is beyond the 20 nm line.  Locally, there will be some gustier winds and increased seas as well.  Not seeing much of an increased swell yet, but it is likely.  The models are not in complete agreement on the location of this storm, so even though the official track takes it east, this will be something to keep an eye on over the next few days.  Of course, there is still nothing out there yet to watch.  Any shift to the west would bring more effects.  Depending on how far west could involve the coast and bring rains.  Any major changes and you will hear about them here!

Good morning!  A repeat of yesterday with a chilly start and a mix of sun and clouds.  Mostly to partly sunny today becoming partly cloudy tonight.  Despite the clouds, it will remain dry with no rain in the forecast.  Temperatures are in the 40’s and 50’s this morning, one of the warmer mornings this week.  High temperatures will be in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50’s inland and along/on the water with mid to upper 40’s across northern areas.  Winds will vary by location with southern areas having higher winds out of the northeast up to 15 mph, while central and northern areas will have a light, cool breeze around 5 mph.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations, however all areas will see gustier winds bordering on cautious conditions just below SCA criteria.  Southern waters will have the higher winds today, into the weekend and central and northern areas could see gusts to 20 knots.  Here are some local conditions forecasts.  Raritan Bay will have northeast winds 5-10 mph becoming east late in the day with gusts to 20 knots then becoming northeast again tonight at 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have northeast winds 8-12 knots becoming east-northeast around 10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds 5-10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots in the afternoon into the overnight with seas 2-3 feet.  Northern inshore ocean waters will have north-northeast/northeast winds 5-15 knots with seas 2 feet at 10 seconds building to 3 feet at 6 seconds.  Southern inshore waters will have northeast/east-northeast winds 10-20 knots with seas 3-4 feet at 6 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have north-northeast/northeast winds 8-20 knots with seas 2-4 feet at 5-6 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions will be ok today with Moderate Risks of rip currents.  Gustier winds and high seas will increase the surf and deteriorate conditions some.  Winds will be northeast at 10-15 knots with gusts higher to 20 knots.  Surf conditions will be normal to elevated with some rougher surf this afternoon.  Wave heights will be 1-3 feet with a 2-3 foot east swell at 7 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index is Moderate at 5/15.  Use caution in the water today with the increased rip currents!

The NHC is watching an area of interest in the Western Atlantic.  Other than that area, the tropics are quiet.
