Title: NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Week Edition: Oct 7-11, 2013

This week will be very unsettled.  It was bound to happen after so many days of nice weather.  The week will start off and end with chances of rain.  A strong cold front pushing through on Monday will bring the possibility of showers and thunderstorms during the day and likely heavier rains and thunderstorms at night.  There is a Slight Risk issued by the SPC for Severe Weather on Monday into Monday overnight.  Strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, dangerous lightning, heavy rains and tornadoes are possible all day.  Rain amounts will be in the 1-2 inch range with 3-4 inches possible locally.  This could cause some localized and flash flooding.  Fog will be likely statewide as well, especially along coastal and marine areas, Sunday Night into Monday Morning.  By Tuesday rain chances are over with until they return on Thursday through the weekend again.  Skies will be cloudy, then sun returning on Tuesday mixed with clouds the rest of the week.  High temperatures on Monday will be in the mid 70’s to low 80’s.  After the passage of the cold front cooler air will move in with high temperatures back into the mid 60’s to low 70’s.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50’s inland, mid 50’s to low 60’s along/on the water and in the low to upper 40’s across northern areas.  After the front passes, drier air will also work in.  Dew points on Monday will be in the upper 50’s to mid to upper 60’s and by Monday Night into Tuesday dew points will return back into the 40’s and 50’s.  This will put the humidity back to low and the sticky and muggy conditions over with!  It is likely to be windy all week as well.  Initially winds will be from the south and then the east-northeast/northeast around 10 mph with higher gusts.  Minor coastal flooding is possible on Monday and Tuesday for areas that are prone to flooding along the coast during strong onshore flows.  Water conditions do not look promising at all this week.  Conditions will be mostly cautious to hazardous with a persistent and strong onshore flow.  Conditions will vary by day and location, but overall will not be good.  To start the week, Small Craft Advisories will be in effect from Monday through Tuesday for all locations from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware including New York Harbor, Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and Delaware River.  Southwest winds 15-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots are possible with seas 4-7 feet at 5 seconds.  Conditions do not look to improve much, maybe a small window here or there during the week and this continues into the weekend.  Surf and beach conditions will echo the water conditions.  The majority of the week will see 15-20 knot winds with gusts 25-30 knots from the south then changing to the east/northeast, rough surf 2-4 feet increasing to 3-6 feet with an increasing swell from the east to almost 7 feet at 4 seconds by the end of the week.   Surf conditions will become dangerous this week and extreme caution be exercised in or around the water.  Water temperatures are steady or slightly warmer with mid 60’s to low 70’s.  UV Index will be Moderate to Low all week.

A strong cold front will move through the region on Monday with Low Pressure tracking into the Great Lakes.  High Pressure will build in behind the front on Tuesday across the region as the front stalls out to the southeast.  Low Pressure may form to the southeast along this stalled out boundary by the weekend as High Pressure moves northeast of the region.

The weekend will be unsettled as well.  Chance of rain are possible both days.  Temperatures will continue in the upper 60’s to low to mid 70’s with overnight lows in the 40’s to 60’s.  Dew points will continue in the 40’s and 50’s keeping the humidity low.  Water and surf conditions will continue with the onshore flow of gusty winds and high seas.

The tropics are quiet again (and no complaints here)

Good morning! 

Cloudy this morning with occasional sun here and there and some patchy fog in some locations.  Today will continue to be cloudy with likely chances of rain and thunderstorms all day and into the overnight.  Some of the thunderstorms may be strong to severe with a Slight Risk across most of NJ.  Thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds, heavy rain, lightning and even a possible tornado.  Rain and thunderstorms will be possible all day with more widespread activity this afternoon.  High temperatures today will be in the mid to upper 70’s inland and along/on the water with low 70’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and low 40’s across northern areas.  Dew points will be in the 50’s and 60’s today making humidity moderate and muggy until the front passes through brining some cooler and drier air.  Winds will be gusty out of the south around 10-15 mph with gusts over 30 mph.

Water conditions are all rated cautious with Small Craft Advisories in effect for Sandy Hook to Delaware including east to Montauk, New York Harbor, Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and Delaware River through Tuesday.  In general, winds will be from the south changing to the northeast later today at 15-20 knots with gusts 25-30 knots and seas 3-6 feet.  Raritan Bay will have southeast winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots becoming south at 15-20 knots with gusts to 30-35 knots this afternoon and then northwest 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight.  Seas will be 2-3 feet then 1-2 tonight with patchy fog possible and limited visibility to 1-3 nautical miles.  Barnegat Bay will have south winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots becoming northwest around 15 knots tonight with seas 2-3 feet.  Delaware Bay will have south winds 10-15 knots increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 30 knots then becoming southwest late today then north winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots.  Seas will be 2-4 feet with possible patchy fog and limited visibility to 1-3 nautical miles.  Inshore ocean waters will have south winds becoming northeast 15-30 knots with gusts to 35 knots and seas 3-5 feet at 6 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have south/south-southeast winds becoming northeast later today at 15-30 knots with gusts to 35 knots and seas 3-5 feet at 6 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions will start out good to ok and eventually deteriorate to poor by this afternoon.  South winds 10-15 knots will increase to 15-20 knots with gusts to 35 knots before becoming northeast and eventually diminishing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight.  Surf is normal this morning, but will become elevated, rough by this afternoon with wave heights 1-2 feet this morning becoming 1-3 later this evening with a 2-3 foot south swell building to 3-5 feet by tonight at at 4-6 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s, maybe even some 70’s.  UV Index is Low to Moderate at 2-5/15.

There are some areas in the tropics being watched again, but nothing to be concerned with right now.

Sorry..this week sucks thd rgmn!  That Low forming along the stalled out frontal boundary looks to be worse than I expected!  Gale Force winds and seas to 12 feet with 1-2 foot higher tides/coastal flooding by the end of the week into the weekend.  I will have more tonight or tomorrow.  Extremely weird weather patterns...or rather weird timing on them.  This is a setup common to late Fall or Winter, not early October.

Good morning!  Back to chilly starts again with 50’s this morning, even cold across northern areas with low 40’s.  A mix of sun and clouds varying from sunny to partly sunny and then mostly clear to mostly cloudy tonight.  The cold front has completely cleared the state and high pressure has moved in bringing cooler and drier air and dry conditions.  There is no rain in the forecast today, but by tomorrow southern areas could see rain chances and by Thursday northern areas will see chances through Saturday.  High temperatures today will be in the mid 60’s to low 70’s.  Overnight lows will be low 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and low 40’s across northern areas.  Dew points will be back into the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s making low humidity and comfortable conditions.  There is a chance of a moderate coastal storm with effects beginning Wednesday Night.  The cold front will stall to the south and Low Pressure will form along it.  This will develop a Low that will track northeast along the coast bringing rain, strong easterly winds, and minor coastal flooding Wednesday through Friday.

Water conditions are cautious with Small Craft Advisories from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware including Delaware Bay today.  Gusty north/northeast winds will continue with seas building to 6 feet.  Raritan Bay will have north winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots becoming northeast tonight with seas 1-2 feet.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northeast winds around 15 knots becoming northeast tonight with seas around 2 feet.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds around 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight and seas 2-3 feet building to 3-5 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have north/north-northeast/northeast winds 10-20 knots with seas 3-5 feet at 6-8 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have north/north-northeast winds 10-25 knots with seas 3-6 feet at 6-8 seconds.  Low pressure will form along the recently stalled cold front.  This will track to the northeast along our coast on Wednesday through Friday bringing gale force winds, seas to 15 feet offshore, rain and minor coastal flooding.  More to come later today on this system.

Surf conditions are good today with normal to slightly elevated and rougher surf.  Strong north/northeast winds at 10-15 knots with some gusts to 20 knots are possible today.  Wave heights will range and average from 1-3 feet with a 3-4 foot southeast swell at 5-8 seconds.  Today will be good and the start of tomorrow will be good to ok before conditions deteriorate tomorrow evening.  Winds, wave heights and swells will gradually increase over the next 24-48 hours.  Surf temperatures are still in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index will be Moderate at 3-5/15.

There are still a couple areas being watched in the tropics, both in the Atlantic.

Good morning!  Cloudy this morning across most of the state with some sun mixed in for some locations.  Clouds will continue for the southern half of the state while the northern half will have partly sunny skies becoming cloudy tonight.  Today will start the prolonged, slow moving coastal storm affecting the region.  Rain will begin with chances for southern NJ during the day today and work its way north.  By tonight, all areas will see rain chances with southern and central areas likely having widespread rain.  All of the state will see rain by tomorrow morning.  Rain chances will be 100% along the coast and across southern areas and decrease through central and northern NJ.  Rain totals for this Nor’Easter have been increased to 1-4 inches with coastal areas seeing 3+ inches.  Rains could cause localized and flash flooding.  Any areas prone to flooding should be alert to this issue.  High temperatures will be in the mid 60’s with overnight lows in the 50’s with mid 40’s across northern areas.  Winds will be gusty across the southern half of the state, especially along the coast.  Northeast winds will average 15-20 mph with gusts to 40 mph today.  Peak wind gusts may top 50 mph over the next few days.  Minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible at high tides.  Coastal Flood Advisories have been extended north along the Delaware River to Salem County and north along the coast to Ocean County with southern counties in a Coastal Flood Watch. Areas that traditionally flood along the coast should be prepared over the next few days.

Water conditions are cautious and poor at best with many areas seeing hazardous conditions.  A prolonged period of high winds and seas from a slow moving Nor’Easter have already begun.  Gale Warnings are in effect for all marine waters from Manasquan Inlet  south through Delaware including Delaware Bay and waters east of 20 nm.  Small Craft Advisories are in effect for all waters from Manasquan Inlet north east along Long Island including New York Harbor and Raritan Bay.  Delaware River is also in a Small Craft Advisory.  Areas in Gale Warnings will have northeast winds 20-30 knots with gusts 30-40 knots with seas 8-12 feet.  Some local forecasts:  Raritan Bay will have northeast winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots by the afternoon with seas 2-3 feet.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northeast winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25-30 knots with seas 4-5 feet.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds 20-25 knots with gusts to 35 knots and seas 3-5 feet building to 4-7 feet with limited visibility at 1-3 nm.  Inland ocean waters will have east-northeast winds 15-30 knots with gusts 35-40 knots and seas 5-9 feet at 6-8 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have east-northeast at 15-30 knots with gusts 35-45 knots and seas 5-9 feet at 7-8 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions will be cautious to hazardous, with worse conditions to the south and deteriorating from the south to north today.  East-northeast/northeast winds 15-30 knots with gusts 35-40 knots.  Extremely rough surf with wave heights building from 3-5 feet to 5-8 feet and then 8-10 feet by tonight (lower waves for northern areas still) with an increasing east swell from 4 feet to 10 feet at 6-8 seconds.   Waves are stacked up and forming 4-5 feet of water at the beach with waves breaking 25 yards before that.  Tides will be running higher with 1-3 feet above normal.  Water temperatures are still in the mid 60’s.  UV Index will be Low at 2/15.

There is still an area being watched in the tropics, but nothing else right now.

Good morning!  Basically, a repeat of yesterday with cloudy skies and chances of rain.  The sun may mix in occasionally in some places, mostly in northern areas.  It is another chilly start this morning, with 40’s and 50’s across the state.  The center of the Low pressure off the North Carolina coast is almost stationary, drifting very slowly north.  High pressure will then force it south again, before it drifts northeast/east-northeast out to sea.  Rain chances increase today for most of the state.  More widespread and heavier rain is possible today, however, heavier rain is going to be in pockets or bands, making appear more scattered.  High temperatures will be in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 50’s inland and along/on the water and upper 40’s across northern areas.  Winds will be gusty in the 10-20 mph range with higher gusts.  Coastal Flooding is still possible today with tides running 1-3 feet above normal.  Coastal Flood Advisories and Coastal Flood Statements have been issued reflecting this.  Times of high tide, especially midday high tides, are the greatest risk for some minor to moderate coastal flooding.

Water conditions are cautious to hazardous today with the same situation as yesterday.  Gale Warnings and Small Craft Advisories are in effect for all marine waters of NJ including Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and Delaware River.  Winds will continue out of the northeast at 20-30 knots with gusts to 40 knots or more.  Seas are 6-12 feet at 8 seconds, varying along the oceanfront with worse conditions to the south.

Surf and beach conditions are hazardous with dangerous surf!  Conditions have deteriorated from yesterday.  Northeast winds 15-25 knots with gusts to 40 knots are possible today.  Surf is extremely rough with wave heights averaging 4-9 feet and an east swell at 7-9 feet  at 8-9 seconds.  Waves are stacking up and the onshore flow is pushing water into the coast leaving 3-5 feet of water at the beach, constantly.

Nothing new in the tropics.  The NHC is still watching an area in the Atlantic.

Good morning!  A cooler start for northern parts of the state, while central and southern areas are already in the upper 50’s and 60’s.  Currently, it is cloudy with some showers in Southern NJ.  The nor’easter is still sitting off of the coast of North Carolina and has actually drifted west some over land.  This storm is starting to wind down for the area, with conditions slowly improving over the next 3 days. This will continue to sit there before moving southeast and then east before going off to the northeast  next week.  Today will be a repeat of yesterday with cloudy skies and rain.  Rain will be scattered again with spotty showers and some heavier rain possible at times.  High temperatures will be in the mid 60’s to low 70’s inland and along/on the water with low 60’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in upper 50’s to low 60’s inland and along/on the water with mid to upper 40’s across northern areas.  It will be windy again with northeast winds 15-20 mph with higher gusts.  Coastal Flood Advisories are still in effect from Middlesex County south down around to Cumberland County.  Minor to moderate coastal flooding is still possible during high tides today.

Water conditions are the same with cautious to hazardous conditions.  Gale Warnings have been lifted, but Small Craft Advisories are still in effect for all marine waters from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware including the New York Harbor, Raritan Bay, Delaware Bay and the Delaware River.  Northeast winds will continue 15-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots with rivers and bays seeing 2-5 feet and ocean waters 6-9 feet at 8 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are cautious to hazardous with high winds and surf today.  Northeast winds will continue at 15-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots.  Surf is rough with wave heights 3-7 feet with a 6-7 foot east swell at 7-8 seconds.  Tides will run high again and beach erosion has occurred and will continue today.  The persistent northeast wind has pushed water into the shore and 3-5 feet of water is holding along the beach out to about 25-50 yards with waves breaking beyond this area.  The surf zone looks like a washing machine and water conditions are dangerous.  Surf temperatures are still in the 60’s and the UV Index will be Low today.

The NHC is still watching that area in the tropics, other than that it is quiet.
