Early morning trip out to the park today. Had some things to get done at home today, so I was on the beach before first light and planned to be home before noon.
Cast a metal/teaser combo in a few spots with nothing. Ran the whole length of the park and only saw a shad landed.
A lot of bird activity on bait about 1/4 mile off the beach. The boats that stopped at the birds moved on quickly.
Ran down to the inlet to use up some leftover crabs. 2nd drop I hooked into a 3lb 17.5in blackfish. My largest to date. Only had two more hits in the next hour.
It was an expensive day though as I blew up the reel on that fish. That's the second reel that crapped out on me this month. fcp

Maybe the grease I used 5hrug. I started using marine breading grease.
Just ordered a tub of Penn grease along with new gears. Both reels broke teeth on the main gear at the beginning of fighting a fish.

I don't think it's the grease, but that Penn Blue Grease is good stuff.
What reels were these? Were they old? New?

A 2 year old Battle and 5 year old Sargus. I've had much bigger fish on both reels without issue.
I'm gonna add an extra shim on the main gear to eliminate and play that may have allowed it to slip.

That may help. Unfotunately, as popular as they are, the weak link for those reels are the pot metal gears. :P
Good luck getting them back in working order. t^
