the sad part is the cleanup, if required, will likely spread the contaminants further. even backfilling after removal will spread the remaining contaminants further.
sometimes (not sure if this is the case here) it's actually better to let it lie.

Funny thing is that I lived along the river. My fishing hole netted many Nothern Pike, Small mouth, large mouth, and yes Stripers! The striper catch is crazy during the spring and fall especially after/during a flood. They are best to leave it alone and let it the bottom cap itself. By the way the only sick looking fish I saw was a large mouth. Other than that a great place to fish in some areas, just release them.
