couldn't find anyone to head out w/me today so i ran solo out of leonardo and out around the hook towards highlands bridge.
small pockets of birds around the hook and on down towards highlands. seemed to be mixed size smattering of blues under the birds.
chased these light bird play activity along with a couple dozen private boats and the party boats. threw diamond & croc jigs and rubber shad, but i had a real tough time hooking up. either a boat would come and scatter the fish or i'd run down a small pod and the activity would subside before i can throw a cast. several times had fish around, but coudn't hook up.
get spanked by blues?!? not good, so after a few hours of this pulled back in near leonardo and worked similar bird play around leonardo for a while to avoid the skunk ( a blue of around 8 lbs on a diamond jig) and wrapped it up a bit short.
first post btw. been enjoying all the good info posted here. hope to post regularly here.

How were the water conditions?
Still not a bad day at all and welcome to the site!

a bit choppy getting out, but once around the hook on the leeward side, conditions were more than manageable

nice to have you here, I am sure you will like it. If you see working birds, and can't hook up with a bluefish, then there aren't bluefish under them... Stripers.... is the ticket. You would not be able to miss a bluefish. That is the key of knowing whats feeding on the bait. Run a diamond jig and not pick up a blue, then switch over to a shad and slow jig under them or throw a floating popper..

Or they were 12" bluefish that are too small for the jigs you are throwin.
Seen that happne many times before.

Was like that a few weeks ago Mike. All small blues. They would hook up on small metals. They wouldn't take anything over an Ava27.
-
Are you sure they were Blues. I had guys telling me they were Albies. We passed them all by for Da Toggies.
-
If they are albies and there tomorrow, I will be after them.
-
Blackfish Jack, the fish that I saw two weekends ago were definately small (very) blues. They were about eight to ten inches long. They would follow the metal right to the boat but wouldn't take anything but a small metal. We did hook up with one and it was about eight inches.
That does not mean that the fish around now are the same. Could be albies around now and wouldn't bite because of the presentation.
Good luck and great fishing. t^

they could be albies, but they would hit a fast retrieve cripple herring.
