Title: Weakfish October 16, 2007
Post by: wink_man on October 16, 2007, 12:53:44 PM
Hello, new to the forum, just found it. It's hard to think bowhunting when the weakies are running. Here's 2 of 3 I took this morning. Oddly, the shorter fish was a half pound heavier than the longer one. 25 1/2 inches, 5 & 3/4 lbs., and 26 inches, 5 & 1/4 lbs. They were taken in the Point Pleasant Canal, on slack tide to incoming on pink Fin-S fish. Was a lot of fun on the fresh water tackle and 12 pound test.

Cool!  Were you fishing by boat or from the shore?  If so, did you anchor up near the west side of the canal mouth?  I've seen a couple aluminum boats anchored up over there a few times.  Perhaps it was you!

The fish are still in the canal. I'm fishing from shore, boats are put away and not going back in till spring.

Caught 1 weakie this morning, 18 inches. First cast was a blue, second cast was the weakie, and I thought it was going to be a good day, however, the blues were right on the bottom and as a result, I caught over a dozen blues, but they destroyed 2 dozen Fin-S Fish on me(I ran out of em, LOL). Usually I can get under them blues and fish the weakies on the bottom, but not today.

Garry, from what I have read of others reports there are black fish to be had in the canal also.  If you fish for them, you might want to pick up some green crabs and give it a go.

Yes, the canal is loaded with blackfish, people are catching 50 to 100 fish, and almost no keepers according to them. I much prefer the weakies while they stay around.
