Title: fresh bait on rt.36
Post by: 700dollarhat on May 12, 2014, 06:21:18 PM
Can anyone tell me where to get bait on rt.36 before Atlantic Highlands? I typically stop at one of the first places and pick up some fresh clams, but lately that haven't seemed very fresh. What do you do when you grab a bag of clams? Seems like they are dead in the bag.

Best way is to poke them.  If they don't react they're probably dead, which is not ideal.  Freshly dead clams can work, but live is best. Of course, if they stink, you will probably want to pass.

If the shell is open and it does not react to you squeezing it closed it's probably dead.  If you can open it with little effort it's dead. Stinky=dead

if you do get some dead ones.. don't waste them.. open them, dice them up good, and throw in the water a little at a time.. it does make a great chum slick.
