Before you spend the cash on a new one make sure of the placement of the 'ducer? Check to see that it is getting clean water, nothing in front of the 'ducer to cause air bubbles, etc. Also make sure it is actually in the water as you are running and that it is positioned to look down at the bottom and not pointed forward or aft.

I have basically the same unit and as was said before, placement and alignment are key. Cleanliness too; if you keep the boat in the water you have to wipe it down regularly or you will lose bottom on plane and wind up having to scrape it. The special transducer paint doesn't seem to have any effect, but I use it anyway. Makes me feel better somehow.

The Airmars are phenomenal from what I have seen, but you will need to hock your boat to afford them.

Check out this video. Although it is for a specific depth finder it covers the basic placement for pretty much all transom mounted transducers.
