Pulled out of Keyport at 4am heading down 80 miles to the chicken Canyon. Cashin, Jersey Joe, Scott G and John made up the crew. The weather prediction was pretty rough so I was gonna hit the Glory Hole first and look for life. We slowed down 10 miles shy of the Glory hole to check out the area when the hydraulic auto pilot piston started to make some noise. Some hydro fluid was leaking from the manifold causing loss of pressure in the entire steering system.
Change of plans now.. The weather was getting much better but there is no way we are going further out with a mechanical issue. Scott and Chris patched up the system and got it down to a slow drip but we did not have spare hydraulic fluid in the engine room to add to and purge the steering system.
I decided to set out the 7 line spread and start the troll in the 240' of water we were in north of the Glory hole and had back north towards the mudhole . We hit all the lobster pots along the way. Water temp was 76.; to 77 Deg . Tuna chicks were the only sign of life along the way.
No fish for us on Labor Day. We pulled the lines at the north side of the mudhole and used the twin screws to steer us back to Keyport. I called Boat US to meet us outside the marina to assist getting the boat in the slip with the strong outgoing current and wind in the same direction. My rudders were useless at this point. The Boat US Capt did a great job assisting us and we were tied up at 3pm.

Boat US +++++
I'll be back Sat. if you need help I am somewhat of a hydraulic expert.
remember- an ex is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure.
no seriously, be back Sat.

Just so you don't feel too badly 1) boat issue, well you can feel bad about 2) I started at the Mud Hole on Monday at sunrise and trolled back and forth to the Glory hole till sunset. 7 rod spread and I only caught a single Mahi. There was no life other than a pod of porpoise on my ride back home. There were no boats anywhere and the weather finally settled to calm around 4pm.
Basically, fishing was horrible.
