SANDY HOOK - The substance that spilled into Sandy Hook Bay has been identified as diesel fuel, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
A Coast Guard crew located a 2-mile-long, 300-foot-wide light sheen on the water on Thursday afternoon.
NOAA Emergency Response Coordinator Frank Csulak told News 12 New Jersey the fuel will likely evaporate throughout the day.
A boom was deployed to shield Horse Shoe Cove.
The shellfish beds have been closed as a precaution to protect wildlife that inhabit the bay.
Authorities are working to determine how the fuel got into the bay.

Diesel fuel does not evaporate as stated by that jake Azz it will linger for years if not recovered. Why do they say home heating oil that leaks in the soil has to be recovered and removed?..because it doesn't dissipate from evaporation.Diesel fuel and heating oil same crap. Gasoline will evaporate but the byproduct will not.
Sounds like Earl is a likely suspect to me,but it could be one of a thousand causes in the area. I can't see why the coastguard didn't conduct an immediate investigation, that was there best chance to locate the source.
