Had Mike Byrne, Matt, Doc Sokol (Skolmann) and Tom Breeland aboard today for a jig trip. Ran out a bit north of the inlet today, found some bait and fish scattered. Picked away with butterfly jigs at mixed size bluefish, short bass, and a few nice keepers early on. After that petered out, we worked our way south. Picked away on the jig, all the way down to Mantoloking. A lot of short bass in the mix, a good deal of mixed size bluefish, still in the mix, even as we got a call to come in on the beach off Ortley around noon. In there, we had bluefish in the 14-18# class whacking our jigs, as well as more short bass, and another keeper by Doc.
Worked our way back out, did nothing. So, we "finished" the day by going up on the troll and had almost constant action with short bass, a couple of double headers, and some bluefish on shad rigs.
On the way in, birds and boiling fish greeted us off Point about a mile out, all bluefish in the 3-10# class. We had lock and load bluefish, 4 on at a time, for about another 45 minutes till we decided to call it quits at 3.
Wound up with approximately another 30 bass, however many more shorts today but we did have several 32-37" keepers, Doc was on fire landing 3 on the butterfly jig to a nice 37"/16# specimen. In addition, we easily boated 75 bluefish, maybe more. Another fantastic day!!
