Capt. Joe of the Irish Ayes and I headed out to Belmar early this morning to try our luck with the blackfish. We boarded the Big Mohawk party boat in Belmar and headed out of the inlet north. There was approximately 25-30 others on board. We basically fished the area around the red church. Although the weather and ocean conditions were pretty decent, the fish weren't too cooperative. There may have been 15-20 keepers. The two of us managed to land three keepers.
It was my first time tog fishing and I had a blast. As most of you probably know, its extremely challenging but very rewarding when you catch a keeper. And although I managed to get "hung up" in the rocks a dozen times or so, I didn't lose a single rig. But I can't take credit for that. Capt. Joe provided me with some techniques that worked everytime. If it wasn't for him, I would have had to take a loan out to buy new rigs. Anyway, it was still a great time on the seas.

Nice report Bob. Sorry I missed the trip.

Nice report Bob...Capt Joe knows his stuff!!

It was a good trip even if we only managed three keepers between us. For the records, Bob was high hook. He had two keepers to my one. Good job Bob! We did have our share of short fish also.
As for loosing rigs. Bob did an excellent job of listening to my advise for getting a hung rig out. Too bad I didn't pay attention in class. ;D I left seven rigs in Davey Jones' locker.
Big fish for the day came from a fisherman on the bow, about a ten pounder. Nice fish.
Also got to meet Flounderman from the forum. It was nice talking to you Rich. Good to put a face to names here. Rich had an excellent day of catching. He fished about four guys down from us an every time I looked over it seems like he was hooked up.
Good boat, good crew. But you have to get there early.

Sometimes I know what I'm talking about. Few and far between, but sometimes ;) grtn
Glad you guys had fun and caught some fish.
Know a few from other websites that were onboard today as well.
I'm still at work... :'( bngh

I remember you saying get there early Gottog.
We pulled up a shade before 6am and there were rods lined up all down one side. All spots on the bow and the stern were spoken for. Most of the people that were going to fish were there already. Very few came after we did. Very sound advise you gave. Thanks for the advise. t^

Bob G and Capt Joe. Nice Report guys, It has to be frustrating for a succesful Capt. fishing an area that he knows so well and have to depend on someone elses choice of spots. TT^

Nice meeting you Joe and Bob. Did my share of catch and release the other day along with leaving some lead down there. Comes w/ the territory but it hurts a little more now since the price of lead is crazy.
Bob said it right. Just an off day catching the finicky blackfish. Water temps still need to creep down a bit.
