Hi All,
Well I just bought a new rig and took advantage or Betty & Nicks sale to do it. Not bad 20% off everything in the store or just about everything.
I bought a 10'-6" Tica Med Heavy graphite rod that will handle from 2-8oz lures on 12-30# line. With that I also bought a Penn 560 Slammer filled with Power Pro.
Now I am looking forward for Friday afternoon to christen it.
Boy that felt good.
A little lighter in the wallet. t^

Sounds great! t^ Good luck with your new outfit! ;D

Thanks, I was looking for something lighter and took advantage of their sale...

That will get you out there. Good luck and good catching with it. t^

Good luck, Paul!
Forgive my ignorance, but is your new reel a conventional? I know last time we hit the beach, we talked about how you wanted to go towards that.

Hi Ash,
No the reel is a spinning reel I opted not to go that route yet maybe during the summer but for now I will stick with the spinning outfit. I am taking a few more people out now and many if not all would not know how to use that setup.
The reel 560 Slammer looked and felt good on the rod so I went with it. The rod is the big brother to yours only a bit longer and much heavier action. Like I mentioned above it will handle lures from 2-8oz.
Here is the reel:

Paul, I picked up the 560L last year. It's the same reel but a live liner. Worked great, I think you will enjoy your new purchase. t^

Hi Joe,
I tried the rig out today with various weight lures and it is great. I love the less weight in the rod but the reel is a little heavier than I would of liked. But it can cast a mile with 30# braid loaded on it.
I tried everything from a 3 1/2 oz Gibbs Polaris to a 5 oz pencil popper and from a AVA017 to an AVA47 plus a 5oz Crippled Minnow. All I can say is I can't wait to get a fish on to legally Christen it.

Sounds like a good combo. It should handle anything you get from the beach. Good luck with it and break it in soon on a decent fish. t^

Great combo Paul. Glad to see you did'nt go with the 12ft rod. Penn 560 is a fantastic reel. If your looking for a lighter Penn Spinner, try the new AF series, they are 1/2 the weight of the Slammers, and I've heard nothing but positive feedback on them. I plan on buying one for myself as a birthday present. You can never own too many reels! <'((((><

Hi All,
I just can't believe I almost let someone talk me into buying something that long. What was I thinking? Oh well at least I mane the right decision at least in my mind I did.
I can't believe how this outfit handles. Great products... t^

Post a photo of you first fish with the new set up! I understand it might be springtime. <'((((><

Maybe not...I was out there today but nothing. I will post as soon as I get something, anything.
BTW, if anyone is going to venture out along the beaches trolling be careful there is a lot of floating logs and wood I noticed in the suds. Have no clue where it came from but most was partially submerged and waterlogged.

What are the 12 ft rods for? I dont have much surf experience, but Ive never seen them used in Jersey.
-
Hi NJJan,
The longer rods are used off the surf. They are for the most part rated for higher lure weights and/or to get a good long cast to the outer bars. There are even longer rods but here in NJ a few of the diehards have them and are turning into somewhat of a relic.
There are longer rods like I said and are used primarily for casting tournaments where they are throwing a lead bank sinker over 200 yards averaging about 220. It is amazing to watch these guys empty a full reel of line in seconds.
I personally don't care for the real long rods opting for my longesd now which is 10'6" Tica graphite. I was being talked into a longer rod but I just could not do it. The majority of my 50+ years fishing the suds I have caught I would say 99% of the fish right in the suds no more that 20 - 30 yards off the beach and out of those I would say most were caught almost at my feet.
A good example is I like to fly fish the surf and I have caught many fish to where I could see them strike the fly.
The big rods are here but with new technology they are slowly being put in the rack and retired for the new light weight graphite.
I hope this helps.
Go onto YouTube and type in Tournament Casting and watch some of the videos it looks like they are using telephone poles.

Most guys use the long rods when they bait fish on the beach. They will cast out into the trough and put the rod in a sand spike. The longer rod keeps the line up over the breakers, something that is not really necessary off of our coast as when our breakers get that high to be of concern most guys opt to be off the beach.
The rod I used for bait fishing was a ten foot Ugly Stick.

Thanks for the info. I dont to take over the topic, so Ill start a new thread with some more questions.
-
12 ft rods are good Flag Poles. <'((((><
-
Don't worry about taking over any thread I post I love it when it has a mind of itself. Something interesting always pops up. I love it.
The long rods have their place but for the most part NJ has shorter distances to the outer bars and I am able to reach most of them. Like I keep preaching learn to read the beach and if the fish and bait are there you can catch fish within 10' of the shore line.
