Is it normal for these to work only at slower speeds? Once I hit a certain speed it cant read any longer.

If installed properly (and depending on unit, altho most newer units can), you should be able to read bottom at a fairly good clip. I can read bottom at 20mph+

Sounds like you are getting air bubbles under the transducer. I would double check the installation and position of the transducer. Unlikely but I have seen in deep water with fast boats that you need to change the pulse timing becasue the boat can get out of range when the return signal bounces back from the bottom. This is somewhat unlikely so I tend to thinkg the td is getting air under it.

See if this helps.

This is from a flasher type unit but the transducer mount is exactly the same for all depth finders.

like Mike said, the quality of the unit will help.

Will have to give that a try.

I have the same problem with a very good unit. Finding out how/why might be a pain because you can't test this on dry land. Adjust and go. If it doesn't work, you have to adjust again. PITA!!!!
