Title: canyon trip
Post by: PHIL on February 25, 2008, 04:17:14 PM
Hey guys, I've never been to the canyon. I want to go this year. Any recommendations for a charter. Me and a couple of friends want to go out of the point pleasant, belmar, manasquan area. I have talked to a couple of captains and they all say pick me. I want to have a great experience because its kind of costly. I guess its around a 24 hour trip. I've seen prices in the 1800.00 area. Will they let me fish for different kinds of fish while I'm out there.  5hrug

i recommend the sea devil out of Pt. Pleasent. its $310 per person. their your're guarenteed to catch fish. last year on 3 trips i caught over 10 yellowfins with my biggest being 120#'s and 2 swords with my biggest being 205#'s. Also caught over 50 mahis.

Tuna is nothing, one or 3-4 you can never tell.  The boat next to you could be catching and you are not.  Then there is the break off problem and the bad gaffer.  If you go out and land one consider yourself lucky.  If you get 2-3 you are very lucky. The one thing that is certain, they will try your skill and you will feel great when the fish hits the deck!

$1800 ???!!!  for an overnighter?  I'll book a half dozen trips right now for that price, regardless of who it is.   rofla

All kidding aside, your looking at 3-3.5K for a 24 hour trip with 6 guys + the mates tip.
My best advice is to scroll through reports from last year on the web. You'll see a pattern of top producing guys. That'll give ya idea of who to look at booking with.
And if ya decide to head out with Pennington, be sure to keep everything clean!!!!  Those who have sailed with im know what I mean  rofla  rofla  rofla

$1800 is dirt cheap & I'd be highly suspect of the quality of the boat, captain crew & gear.

I'm looking at doing a 22 hour trip with a very well known boat & captain (not the Canyon Runner as I was leaning to at first). The boat is called the Over-Under. Their rate is $3600. But I'm anticipating a fuel surcharge as no doubt fuel prices will be increasing. Haven't made any reservations just yet.

Over-Under is great, I have gone with them in the past and have two trips booked already for this year.  Let me know if you need people to fill your charter.

Trey is REAL good.

I have sailed on four of their boats and everyone is really nice, Trey is a perfectionist who gets really upset if a hook pulls but that is because he wants you to land every strike.  They run a first class operation and know what they are doing as do most of the real professionals.  I doubt if they have run over their own anchor rope......

I've been in email contact with Trey.

Dates I told him I'm looking at are Sept. 11-12.

I'm kinda in limbo as to booking any trips until I know the final tab of of son's Bar-Mitzvah in May.
