Do true stripers survive in freshwater; or are the ones in freshwater all hybreds
-
I'm sure there is a lot more scientific information available, but stripers live in saltwater, and spawn in freshwater. Fish that reproduce like this are called andromodous. Other species such as salmon do as well.
The hybrids do not reproduce and are stripers cross bred with white bass by hatcheries normally in land locked freshwater impoundments.

True stripers survive and thrive in all freshwater environments. They have been successfully stocked in many large reservoirs throughout the country. I had a chance to catch a few in Lake Mead, in Nevada, a few years back! ;D

The stripers that are out west came from New Jersey many many years ago. They shipped them out west in rail road cars and were introduced to San Fransisco Bay in 1879.
At least New Jersey used to do things right way back when. t^

Landlocked Stripers first happened in Santee-Cooper SC. They built a dam on the Santee river which inadveratntly landlocked the local population of stripers that lived there. They did well so many other resevoirs stocked them. Most fresh water striper fisheries are a combination of stocking and natutal reproduction. The nearest lake to us that I know of with true Stripers is Raystown Lake in western PA.
Also true that Hybrids do not reproduce natuarally.
