Anyone have away of keeping this monsters off your boat? Get within a couple hundred yards of land and they start gathering. Read somewhere that fabric softener sheets help. 5hrug
-
yesterday I was gonna try a shotgun ,they were bad ,no wind
-
Shotgun. I would probably shoot a hole in the boat. 5hrug
-
impossible, they are deadly

Listerine as in the Mouth Wash at least to put on you to keep them from biting TT^

There was a clammer that used to come into the shop that swore by Listerine to keep them from biting. I never tried it. I've had good success keeping all bugs from biting using products with 100% Deet, such as Maxi-Deet. I wouldn't put it on my daughter though. It's nasty stuff! :P

Came across this article.
http://www.eagletribune.com/punews/local_story_196011833.html
Article says this stuff works. Straight Arrow Body Guard Towelette. Dont know if they can be purchased locally.
-
Interesting article. I wonder why they work so well. They are basically just Deet too!
I have had success with OFF with the DEET in it! I have used the Skintasic Family Care wih the Deet 15% and the Deep Woods when the bugs won't let up with Deet 25% and up to 98%. They also have the Picaridin which doesn't seem to work as well.
Maybe I am just getting lucky too! I won't use it on my kids either, although they say it is safe.
You need one of the fishing pole fly swatters with you. You can get some amazing speed whacking those pests with that!!
Good Luck

Everything I GOOGLED on greenhead repellent brought me to GREENHEAD Repellent.
http://www.stopbitingme.com/main.html
Has anyone ever used this? They claim that it is more effective because it is water based and less of the repellent evaporates. Seems to be made local and what a good amount of the local B&T shops carry.
Thanks

I have used the Greenhead Repelant stuff. It works good for about 10 minutes or so. Then you have to reapply. The flys still land on you, but they fly off right away. Annoying, but they don't stay on you long enough to bite you. I would use it again if I were to fish in an area where they are noted to be. t^

while crabbing during a west wind, an old timer let me use his hommade stuff. worked better than anything i've ever used, and smelled better. blue listerine (has to be blue) mixed with a little water in a spray bottle t^
-
is that better the deet.
-
I was just reading up on Greenheads yesterday. Male and Females usually eat Nectar but females need fresh blood to reproduce. And they don't inject a little stinger in to get the blood, they tear at the skin and lap up the blood. EVIL EVIL little girls they are >:(
-
I am going to have to try the listerine trick!!
I must have dated a few greenheads too!!

I am taking my daughter out on Tuesday for some crabbing and I have been nervous about hell well she will be able to deal w/ these monsters. I will definately try this listerine trick and report back on how I made out. Would you have any guess on the mouthwash to water ratio?
-
not really, i believe the water just thins it a little, helps it spray better, and it's not as sticky
-
I wouldn't take any chances.. use it straight..
-
this is also the largest difference from fishing at my house in Little Egg Harbor and Atlantic Highlands. No greenies in Atlantic Highlands. But down in the Manahawkin area, there are just too many swamp areas down there.
-
So true!! They actually beg southern NJ residents to build or put up green fly traps in their back yards!! In the same report I read about green fly traps, there was some insane number of greenhead larvae in southern NJ as compared to northern NJ...all attributed to the swamps and marshes!! Sort of the same problem with mosquitos too!

Just bought my Listerine, Original Blue Cool Mint Flavored. The green heads at Beaver Dam are gonna have the brightest whitest teeth in town by tomorrow afternoon!!! rofla rofla rofla

So when I smell something minty....it's just the greenheads you scared away!?!?

I just picked up a small bottle of Listerine today. I will make up a batch and give it a try this week as well. Maybe as early as tomorrow.
Happy Fly Swatting

I got this off another NJ site:
....claims Hawaiian Tropic #6 oil will prevent any fly from biting. They will still land on you but will refuse to bite. If it doesn't work at least I'll have a nice tan to go along with my welts.
-
LOL....I was armed with the listerine on my crabbin trip yesterday, but the flys were not so bad until late in the afternoon so we stuck to basic bug spray. Let me know how you make out with the Suntan lotion.
-
I use AVON, Skin So Soft, it is a bath oil but it works. don't delute it. use it full strength. It is an oil so you have to be careful as you can get sunburn very easily. just put in a spray bottle and spray it on, the flies hate it. it will make the floor of the boat slippery so be careful.
-
My Plan:use the Avon skin so soft, mix with Blue Listerine, and Johnny Red and drink it.
Even if the Greenies get me I wouldn't feel those nasty bastar$$.
Whoever has success with their efforts: please POST!!!

Hey AJ, if you did that we would be looking for a bunch of soft, clean tooth flies with hangovers that could give a dang if they get swatted or not.

Tried listerine. It does seem to keep them off. Still buzzing around though. They would hit you but didnt land. I think we should find a volunteer. Dip him or her in mouth wash. Drop off in a well populated greenhead area for 1 hour. Only way we will know if it works. Probably should be naked too. >:D >:D
-
Well, I was going to volunteer Rod...until you got to that nude part... cfzd thud
-
well, that area well populated with greenheads would surely be the end of Seven Bridges Road. there's an area there my friend and i call the "gauntlet" there's a path to get to the water, surrounded by trees, about 1 person wide, and LOADED with greenheads. once to the other side, it's moderately better.
what can we call that shot, anyway....skin so soft, listerine, and jack. we should all do a round at the next njswf party.
-
Man I hate greenies.. For some reason, I attract them like I'm made outta ham..There can be 3 other people on the boat, and I'll be the only one gettin bit. rgmn Last time I fished B. Bay I wore the bug suit I use when spring Bear hunting in Canada.. Although anyplace it was tight to my body, they bit right thru it.. I may also try the listerene trick.. Deet works great, but I worry about it getting on the boat and equipment. I've had it eat the finish off my bow and gunstocks, so I'm sure it's no good on gelcoat, line etc.. Also makes the deck slick when guys get overspray on it.
-
If listerine repels greenheads what attracts redheads? >:D

Anyone ever used this Skedattle Stuff??
www.skedattle.com (http://www.skedattle.com)
Supposed to work really well and is all natural, chemical free. The manufacturers did some tests too and proved it more effective than deet. I don't know how it will measure up for greenheads, but I am going to give it a try...especially on the kids!
