Title: Safety question
Post by: Reckless on August 05, 2008, 04:45:12 AM
Why do some boaters feel its necessary to pass as close as possible to me going as fast as they can when I am drifting? I am sure this happens to everyone. I am not sitting in a narrow channel or anything. So they have plenty of room. When I say close I mean 30 feet. A** Holes!!

They do that because they are A**Holes.  We had it don't to us during our Fluke Tournament.

I don't get why they have to do that. Even in a small channel, slow down a bit. I am not impressed that your boat can go fast.
That old guy in the big boat that does all of the time at the TC ticks me off. He don't care about the wake he is throwing at some guy in a 16' boat. Some day he will hirt someone and I would like them to nail his a@$.

I agree.. The lack of courtesy and common sense at times can be staggering. I always try to avoid throwing a big wake on drifting boats, and respect no wake zones. I often feel foolish when running up the Shrewsbury for fuel, as most other boats go screamin by as I putt along. On the other hand, when I'm drifting in a channel, I understand that the channel is for thru traffic and I fish only by the grace of the CG turning a blind eye.. If we slowed to idle for every boat drifting the Reach, the run from the back of the bay to the Hook would take forever. But even when I'm running out, the bay is deep enough that I can swing wide out of the channel to avoid the fishing fleets.. The thing that kills me the most is when we're outside drifting the beaches.. With 100 yds to the beach and nothing but Ireland to the East, guys will run between the beach and the fleet constantly. Makes no sense at all to me, other than a "look at me" mentality I guess.  I think most true fishermen try to be courteous, but I keep my head on a swivel constantly watching out for the Mamalukes.

I agree Mark.
I miss alot of fish because I watch boats. I also wonder if this guy can see me.

Frank even in the open ocean sometimes it seems like they aim for you. You can be 4 miles off the beach and every trip it seems like some guy will have to buzz you. I don't unterstand it at all, somedays I want to throw a couple

I can't count the number of times I have gone into the cabin and started the engine thinking the person at the wheel of the boat heading strait on to us is asleep. So far, they have all turned off before the need to move.

Does not matter where you are either. As Skip said, you can be out in open ocean or tucked in tight to the beach, happens everywhere.  >:(

They are a$$ holes. They should know they are fully responsible for any damage their wake causes.
Some one I knew use to keep 6,8,10 oz, available.
Once he casted a Hopkins into a sailboat that past just feet away and cought the a$$ hole in the shoulder.Too bad he lost the Hopkins.

treebeard, I feel the same way when I go through a no-wake zone. A couple of times I've been scrubbing the boat down at the end of the day and almost been knocked out when a wake I didn't notice hit the boat.  One guy I yelled at said to Shut the F up his wake wasn't that bad.  He was setting a good example for the 3 kids riding the bow.
Also, down in SIC there is a certain catamaran party boat who really likes to force smaller boaters out of the channel along the ICW.  I've also had him pass within 50 feet of me in the ocean.  Total jerk.
