Title: Circle Hooks for Fluke?
Post by: Mr Limpett on August 06, 2008, 03:20:33 PM
when conditions aren't good for jigging, I've
been using a fishfinder with a fluke rig. I
might as well use my own leader matereal and
tie on a hook. What kind & size though? There doesn't seem to be a reason to use the gigantic
hooks that come with the rig, but I don't want one so small that I guthook them. What do you use?

I have been using a 1/0 long shank with a slight offset.  I got a bag of them at one of the winter fishing flea markets this past year.  I think it was something like $6.00 for 100 hooks.  Can't beat it.

I have had good luck off the beach this year with them tied onto a dropper loop in front of a bucktail with a chartreuse 4" swimming mullet.

I also like the long shank because I can tie teasers out of them as well over the winter.

Good Luck

Paul

I like circles for the rodholder rods.  Almost always a guaranteed hook up.

However, I also prefer Octopus hooks on the rod I am holding.

I match my hooks to my bait and not so much to the fish. I like octopuss and use Gami's from size 2/0 -6/0. My buddy uses circle hooks and he gets 4/0 - 7/0.  The circle hooks seem smaller...not sure why.
Anyway, remember, you gotta snell the circle hooks for them to work proper.  t^

Reel Time, I went with the Aberdeen hooks from Cabelas. Just got them (size 2/0) they look
great, very lightweight but strong. I hope to
try them out this week.

sweet, hope you like'em. i got no complaints about them, and havent gut hooked anything with them yet either. bewarned though,, they are friggin sharp. had one come loose outta a fluke as i was grabbing the leader and it sank to the bone on my finger. ya, it hurt a little bit.

Anyone use circle hooks for any other species of fish?  I might try some smaller ones for freshwater.  I gut hooked a bass today while baitfishing.  I hate gut hooking fish, especially since I throw them all back  nosmly!
