Title: AC Converter
Post by: Hotrod on August 11, 2008, 05:03:32 PM
Has anyone installed an ac converter on their boat....  to run like a coffee pot and such.. I know they make 12v ones.  but they take 45 Minutes to brew a pot. ;D

Thinking of just the plug in one. so can I also charge camera and video batteries.

I have a jumper with the adapter, light, jumper cables, and just use that.  1 charge last forever.

if you got a big enough 1 it would do fine. i had a small 1 in the big truck that would run a 12"tv/vcr and not much else with it.

I have an AC inverter in my truck.
I can bring it out to my boat and pulg it into my cig lighter. It's 400w and it's not enough to run a coffemaker, but it can run a laptop. If you have nice dry location, you should be good as long as you get one that has enough watts for your needs.

Remember, the inverter drains your batteries and a generator uses gas, but it can charge your batteries too if need be.

3000 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter, 6000 Watt High Surge with Wireless Remote Control. (12V DC to 110/120V AC)

Here's a great bargain for you!!! This inverter is made from the same factory as the Coleman brand. The Power Express brand name inverter is much better quality than Coleman brand or the rest of the brand because it comes/improves with the following:

This Inverter comes with:

1) Unique WIRELESS Remote Control (Receiver and Transmitter) that you can turn on/off the inverter itself.

2) Built In Bar Graph: Displaying both the Voltage and Wattage. You know for sure extacly how much the output is so you can control your inverter on the output of wattage and battery voltage.

12V DC to 110/120V AC Power Inverter
100% Excellent quality.
Power Express Brand (same factory as Coleman)
Unit in a Power Express factory beautiful/colorful gift box
2 year warranty
Turn your vehicles' battery into multiple AC outlets!
3000 watts continuous. 6000 watt high surge
12 volt DC to 110-120V volt AC power inverter
Provides household current from any 12 volt power port
Run power tools and worklights. Run refrigerators and microwaves. Run space heater or cooling fans. Chain Saw, sump pump, power computers, printers, TV, VCR and peripherals and much more

Specifications:
Maximum continuous power: 3000 watt
Surge capability(peak power): 6000 watt

Input voltage range: 11-15VDC
Waveform: Modified sine wave
Outlets on inverter: Four 110/120V AC 3 prong grounded
Wireless Remote control switch (Transmitter & Receiver) included

Features:
Anodized Aluminum Case: Provides durability and maximum heat dissipation.
High Speed Cooling Fan.
On/off switch.
Bar Graph of Battery voltage and Output wattage display
Ground terminal.
Positive power input terminal.
Negative power input terminal.
Four Standard North American 3 Prong AC Receptacles.

Safety Features:
Short circuit protection
Over voltage protection
Low Voltage Alarm
Under voltage protection
Overload protection
Thermal protection
Soft star system

Soft Start Technology (SST):
Before the introduction of Soft Start, high startup currents from large inductive loads could shut down the inverter. Soft Start improves inverter operation. Major features incorporated in SST include:

1. Gradual voltage ramp-up during inverter startup. This eliminates failed cold starts under load.

2. Output that momentarily dips in voltage and quickly recovers to allow large motorized loads to start. This eliminates almost all shutdowns from momentary overloads.

This power inverter also incorporates a new cooling technology that more efficiently cools the power transistors, and combined with Soft Start, dramatically increases reliability and the life of the product.

Nice.  A little more than I wanted to spend to make a pot of coffee :)

The 150$ one would do the trick.  How do I hook these up?

Red lead to red on the house switch, and black to ground bus, with a proper sized fuse on the redlead. Very simple and straight foward.

Just make the dam coffee at home and put it in a thermos

Keep in mind inverters invert the DC current to approximate an AC sine wave. Only the best and most expensive truly approximate the right AC waveform- most are noisy sloppy and inefficient. You will have a lot of heat both from the inverter itself and any transformer type plugin you use. It will take, say, 15 amps at 12V DC to make a crappy 1 amp sawtooth-shaped 120Vrms AC wave. Your house battery will drain faster than you expect. Any sensitive electronics may spontaneously combust. Coffee makers will work OK but I like the Thermos idea better. Make sure you keep your starting battery isolated when running the inverter with the engine off.

I use a Vector Power inverter to run my electronics while on the road and had no problems at all.

It might not be the cleanest sine wave but a saw tooth it is not.

I have a 400 and 800 watt inverter from West Marine. I use the 400 watt for charging cordless tool batteries, drop lights, cell phone ect. I plug that one into the lighter socket or my jump pack. The 800 watt will run my bench mount Craftsman grinder/wire wheel in my mobile work shop.  Just clamps on to the battery posts. Matt.
