Last year was my first attempt to extend my season through the fall. Thus I don't have much experience with the fall run. I have caught a few while going for late season weaks. So, what are the main differences between spring striper fishing and fall striper fishing?

There is so much bait in the water in the fall that you can use different kind's of Jigs to match the hatch.Just look for the diving birds & get jiggy ;)

Hi DAK,
The one main difference is the bait of choice. The Fall run usually begins to heat up when the Mullet start leaving the inlets. From what I have been observing is that we might have an early run this year. The Mullet are gathering in the rivers now ans as the water temps never really got to high the run will start early and end later we hope.
Unlike the Spring run the Stripers will go for lures so anything that resembles the bait that is running at the time will work. Right now AVA's will work great along with Hopkins and Deadly Dicks as the spearing are around.
The only problem with the Fall run is you never know if the run will be inshore or off shore. Last year it seemed that they ran well off shore and by-passed us completely.
The only thing that remains fairly stable is what time to catch the big guys and that is Dusk till Dawn. As the stripers are nocturnal and feed primarily at night.
I hope this helps.
Happy Catching
Paul

AS has been said FAll fishing is mostly Trolling or Jigging/Lures....how ever we have had success clamming on the clam beds at the right time.
During the fall you will see the Bass/Blues up boiling on the surface chasing bait use AVA from 27-67, Deadly Dicks, Montack Mikes, Krocodiles, Hopkins, Kastmasters all work great.
Love the fall fishing.......the past 3 years the large body of fish has gone straight from the tip of Long Island to South Jersey....bnut there is still good fishing.

Just wait till I hold your hand & show you how it's done ;)
Tell Uncle Luna to rest his arms !

uhhh.. you don't have to hold my hand... ;D Just pick a date and we are THERE... Maybe we will bring HotRod and get him into one.. I don't think he broke the 20 lbs mark yet, or even the 15 lbs. ;)

Re Hot Rod that would be great.
We's can all get jiggy.
I will be in touch

oh I'll be all over them this year
-
Chum and clam bellies in the spring with some owrms and bunker mixed in. Anchored by a wreck or a deep drop off in the srping.
Eels, and other live bait or, jigs and lures, while chasing birds in the fall.
-
Hmmmmmmmmm, holding hands, getting jiggy...I'd recommend leaving the camera home for that trip. ;D
-
I knew something like that was coming.
-
difference is not having to anchor ;D
Love them eels ;D ;D

Love them eels ;D ;D
so you drift when U have a live eel on as bait???
I've only used live eel off the surf... with success...
-
Yep, a nice drift keeps them at the end of the leader. They never really get tangled ;D Fish-finder with about 4 ft. leader and a nice circle hook. Striper candy. ;D

Another part to this topic - where?
I hear that the surf and inlets are prime areas to hit in the fall, but how far into the back and up the rivers will the fall run stripers go? Obviously they are not spawning, so we won't be finding them all the way up in the fresh, but how far back do they go? Also, I guess you can still find the residents in the rivers come Oct - Nov? ???

I always tend to pick the real big fish in the fall from pretty deep waters. Sandy hook channel, terminal, and off the beaches. The exception of course are those blitzes ;D
