Title: Carp fishing
Post by: fishon42 on August 31, 2008, 07:39:52 AM
After a few hours of fishing for trout at a nearby stream in bloomingdale (1 trout, popped off 5 feet from me).. I decided to go fishing for carp at a descent size pond about 10 minutes from my house. Got a bag of corn, threw a few handfuls out... put a few pieces on my pole, my cousin had 2 rods out, started at about 700. Messed around with my fly rod, and some flies, caught some very small bass and sunnies, but no 20+ # carp I was looking to catch. Only my 2nd time doing that, first time I caught one about 20 pounds. Mosquitos were getting out of control so we left at 900.

In Europe, the Carp is considered a sport fish by many.  They give a good account of themselves on light tackle.

Nice report!!  Nice catching, even though you didn't find your carp.

Carp fishing is a blast...even though most people consider them "trash" fish here.

If you are ever in the Toms River area and want to do some great carp fishing, try the Trilco Extension of the Toms River.  Best access is off of S Main St in South Toms River.  You can fish right in what appears to be a lake, but it is actually the river.  It is tidal and brackish water in there, however it must be more fresh than salt.  This is behind the Palermo Plumbing Supply Bldg(which used to be the Playstation and a long time ago Trilco).  The bait of choice there is raisins and molasses and cornmeal dough balls.  You can make them up the night before and freeze them so they are not so sticky!  They pulled some monster 20+ lb carp out of there in June and July!

I've caught carp in the rahway river as a kid. Never really had a scale but i bet a bunch were in the 20's. It always boiled my blood fishing for trout and seeing a pack of these monsters cruise by along the surface. Later, I found out how to catch carp.  ;D
