Title: Hudson River Fishing
Post by: MaxTheRelax on September 02, 2008, 10:46:51 PM
Hey all, I'm new to this forum and was hoping some of you guys had experience fishing the Hudson River because I'll be going out on my buddies boat for the first time later this week.  I have never fished this river before, he's docked in Haverstraw and we are looking to catch ANYTHING that is out there.  I understand stripers aren't biting now, but what about carp or catfish?  If anyone can help out I'd appreciate it.  Basically I want to go out there and target a couple different species, know what lures/bait to use and hopefully have some luck. Thanks guys!

Welcome Aboard MaxTheRelax,

Be patient and the guys will respond soon on this one.  I am from central NJ and do not fish up that way.  But we had a question very similar and if I remember it did help.

Again Welcome Aboard.

Happy Catching

Paul

Thanks guys, I hope I get some responses tomorrow because I'm headed out on Thursday.  This site does seem to have a lot of knowledgeable anglers though, so I'm sure I'll learn a lot.

;D ;D ;DWELCOME AND I will handle this  t^ hI THIS IS THE RUGMAN . I fish the river alot and I start in late April . I start fishing under the Tappen Zee . We start fishing with blood worms and in May we fish with freash herring. After the big one move up river we will trailer are boats up to stoney point and then after a few weeks we will head to the round out creek up in Kingston N.Y . After a few weeks of fishing up there with Eles the stripers will start to spaw and it is over by then . The next run is in October when the herring comes up to  Peimount just before the T-Zee.GOOD LUCK AND KEEP A TIGHT LINE  t^ Try this site it is great for getting fishing repots from the hudson river .HUDSON RIVER FISHING ASSOCIATION

Rugman, I understand that the stripers aren't biting right now, that's why I was curious as to what other types of fish I can go after tomorrow.  If you were to go out on the Hudson this time of year, what would you be fishing  for?

I dont fish the hudson this time of year . You can hit some stripers . Some will hang around . You will run in to catfish perch , eles . stergons carp and if you go north you will hit some nise small and large mouth bass . just fish with some cut bait . what ever you can find this time of year . Some blood worms and some sandworm will work . Like I said go on the site and read the fishing reports and they will tell you what is happeng and what they are bitiing on. Oct we use bunked clams and herring and what ever bait we have left over chrz

Thanks rugman, I know the fishing sucks on the Hudson right now but we'll see what happens.  I'm thinking of bringing along some hot dogs and bread and sinking it on the bottom.  Maybe we'll manage a catfish or carp.

Rugman, I'm using my freshwater rod with 12lb test, what kind of weight will I need to hold bottom?  I have a feeling the current is pretty strong in the Hudson.  I can't put a 2 or 3oz weight on the pole I have.
