The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council has proposed a coastwide summer flounder regulation of a 20-inch minimum length with a two-fish possession limit, and a season from May 1 to Sept. 30. The National Marine Fisheries Service has expressed a preference for going back to coastwide regulations, though they would be particularly difficult for the southern states that have smaller fluke. New Jersey surely will be fighting to retain conservation equivalency that allocates quotas to the states and allows them to develop regulations that should keep the recreational catch within that limit.

Despite high minimum sizes and short seasons during a year of economic downturn and record high fuel prices, the MRFSS Survey indicated that only Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina didn't exceed their quotas this year. New Jersey was only 7 percent over, and won't have to take as severe a hit as if the coastwide measure were to be adopted. On the other hand, New York was over by 39 percent even with their 20 1/2-inch minimum, and will need a 42 percent reduction for 2009 that actually makes the coastwide proposal attractive to them. Much more will be known about the 2009 fluke season after the Council meeting in Montauk next month.

More of the same ol', same ol'.

I'd still like to challenge them on their figures of last year's (or any year's) catch. They are a bunch of bumbling idiots, those who are running this show.  nosmly

If that's the case it won't be worth even trying from the surf.

With everyone saying that they are fishing less and Party boats all talking about low fares this year due to the regulations...how did NY over fish by 39%   and why does every state have to suffer because of NY? I mean I have to fish NY regs anyway due to the fact I have to go thru the NYC bight...but ...it just doesn't make any sense.  5hrug  5hrug

I saw this coming after reading about the last ASMFC Meeting.  I thought, somewhere, they would put a slot fish or two in there and maybe offer a bonus tag like they do for stripers in NJ.

I agree, Capt Joe, I don't know how NJ goes over by 7%??  Someone was catching fluke and not telling 5hrug.  I have always been able to take a few fluke in the surf in the summer or get a few keepers in the Manasquan Inlet.  Not this year for me...not one keeper.  They must get low bid statisticians!

Now, it will be interesting to see how short or long the season is.  If they cut the season off in September again...probability of fluke from the surf is much lower.

At what point do people say the hell with it I am taking shorter fish? Its like anything else over regulate it and people will find away around it. They are probably doing more damage by pissing people off. Make honest people into dishonest ones. Government seems to be good at that. 5hrug

Isn't that the truth!

It is funny how they statistically count the recreational quota.  Funny how they want the "registry" or a license too, so they can determine if more or less people are fishing.  They never take into account that a good amount of people C&R...or don't catch much!

They can have my quota of fluke over 20 inches...I prefer the smaller ones, they taste better!
