Not quite sure if the stripers are around the IBSP/Seaside area just yet.

Try reading this post a little bit.

http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=3964.0

Has lots of useful information that will help very much in finding where to throw your line.

Other then that, use small bits of clams on high-lo rigs with small hooks. 6/0 hooks should be sufficient. Good luck.

Welcome  grtn
If you head out that way, stop at Grumpy's or Betty & Nick's on the way and they'll put you on the right path.
Good luck.  Make sure you report back. t^

First welcome to the site.  You have found the best and friendliest fishing sites out there.

As far as fishing IBSP, it is starting to heat up out front with a handful of stripers being caught.  Right now the best offering that local B&T's have are clams.  Use small pieces and smaller hooks than usual 3/0 to 5/0 with 5/0's the choice right now.  If you can find or make your own Hi - Lo rig that seems to work the best for now.

Will you be driving on or parking in one of the lots and walking on?

I also will be going out there on Thursday it looks like.

Happy Catching

Paul

Indeed there are a few bass being caught out front. Most bass have been caught on clams or worms but a few keepers have been caught on plugs as well. It's starting.

well after driving to cabelas in harrisburg pa through the traffic and thinking. i believe the lure was to heavy i didnt know every pole has a limit on the weight you can you use. so i bout a nine foot tica rod now if this break ill use a tree branch and some wire im not driving ack to cabelas nooo wayyy tooo far. fcp

What size rod did you crack?  3oz isn't that heavy.  Sounds like it might have been a fault in the rod.  If you are going to be fishing IBSP or the Jersey Coast in general, I recommend getting to know the local Bait & Tackle Stores.  They are a wealth of information and rods that are warrantied can be brought right to them.  Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops are great, but always a long ride for most people.

Good luck?

the rod that i cracked was a 11 ft cabela predator i was trying to use a poper while i was casting out i heard a loud crack,  but my tica rod just came n today 9 foot so i should be good. 30lb test power pro braided yellow

That rod is rated up to 3oz, so it should have handled a 3oz popper.  Could have been a fault in the rd.

You should be happy with the Tica.  t^

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL out there!!!  I know you are new to surf fishing, but I don't know what kind of experience you have with the ocean.  With the high winds from the storm, they are forecasting 7-10 foot waves along with higher tides.  The beach is already very unstable from the last storms and the pounding it took this winter.  There is also a lot of debris, large branches and wood in the surf.  Make sure your footing is stable and the waves are clear.  It only takes a split second in surf like this to get knocked down and sucked in the wash.

I am not discouraging you from going, but just be very cautious and aware of the strength the ocean has.  Not to mention how cold the water still is...since you work in Trauma Medicine you are probably well aware of this.

Hi my name is dan and I am new to this as well. How much is the entrance fee to get into IBSP ? Is it best to  wait until Sept when there is no fee as the fishing might be better then  ^-^

Welcome aboard.
The entrance fees to the park are $6 during the week or $10 on weekends.  That doesn't change in the off season.
When to go depends on what you want to fish for.  Right now is mostly fluke during the morning and sharks at night.
Come Sept. the stripers will start to show up again and it will get better from there.

South of Seaside Heights/Park. Go onto the island and head south, end of the island.

IBS P= Island Beach State Park.

Welcome aboard Steve,

First of all there are no dumb questions here.  Island Beach State Park is roughly a 10 mile long stretch of land that has at least in my mind the best fishing around.  You have your choice of easy access to either the bay or the ocean, with parking lots that dot the island.  These lots make it easy for anybody with any type of veh to gain access to the beach to fish.

There are 2 huge bathing beaches for the family and if you have a veh that is 4 wheel drive you can gain access at 3 points along the island.  The park is open all year but it will cost you to gain access unless you have a State issued Senior Citizen card than to just drive in it is free.  Other wise it will cost you $6.00 on weekdays and $10.00 on weekends like Chris mentioned.

To drive on the beach there are 2 passes, $50.00 for a 3 day pass and $195.00 for the whole season (one year).  It is still a bargain especially if you are out there as much as my family is during the coarse of the year.

The best time to fish IBSP is in the Spring and the Fall as the fish are on the move and the beach comes alive with tons of fish to catch.  If you are new to surf fishing there is a learning curve so don't give up to soon.  Right now the back bays and tributaries are starting to warm up and soon the fish will put on the feed bag.

If you are a seasoned fisherman it is an ideal spot as like I mentioned before you have access to the bay, ocean and the inlet.  I am out there early but the fish usually start to be caught at a regular rate around Mothers day.  Now is the time to do some scouting and getting use to the beach as it has been a long hard winter and the cob webs need to be dusted off.

I hope this helps.

Happy Catching

Paul

Welcome Scubasteve! t^

To get to IBSP take the parkway south to exit 82B.  This will put you on Rt.37 east.  It's about 6 miles or so.  After you go over the bridge, stay in the right lane and take Rt. 35 south.  Follow Rt. 35 south (it will turn into Central Ave.) about 3 miles until you get to the gatehouse at IBSP.

Good luck! t^

I was wondering if anyone could advise how far down into ibsp you can drive, and if you can take a truck onto the sand.  I was also wondering if you can drive on the beach south of holgate in LBI.  Any info would be great.  Thank you and stay safe.

IBSP
The road runs from the park entrance to about a mile or so north of the inlet.
Beach buggy access is by permit only.  $50 for 3 days or $195 for the year.
There are a couple miles at the north end that are off limits to trucks years round.  During the summer there's a section in the middle that's off limits.

Post by: ped579 on March 14, 2011, 09:06:54 AM
What Chris has said.  Holgate is kind of strange as it closes all its beaches south of the road at the parking lot due to the Piping Plover nesting.

It is closed all summer long which makes a very good fishing ground off limits.

Happy Catching
