I think the beer rule is 1 beer per fish on deck per person.

The funk master is a little busy, but I'm sure he will put together a good list.

Keurig will be there.  Jets teddy bear pillow assured he would bring it.  It's also been getting a steady diet of spring water instead of tap water so Rod can't complain about the iron deposits at the bottom of the reservoir.  Although it's a good character builder.   5hrug

Rick I'll have your check at the banquet.

That's 20% tip. We can do this two ways. If we are unhappy we give them less and refund to everyone or change it to 10% and let everyone give more if they feel they earned it.
I don't really care either way

That's one option Rick. Another is if people don't like it don't go.  They can organize their own trip, make phone calls, collect money and have the thankless job to pull this off.

1) Its standard to build a 20% tip in any trip like this.
2) The Gambler runs a Top Notch operation, with a top notch captain, crew and boat.

I for one just want to say thanks Rick for putting this together.  People don't understand all the work that goes into making the trip happen.

Thanks Kenny for the Blackfish trip.
Thanks Rod and NJSWF crew for the banquet.

Ah, let's not be so hard on Kevin.  He was just making a suggestion.  I don't think that asking questions, making suggestions or disagreeing with some aspects of a trip is so awful that it should preclude someone from participating.  Everyone's input should be welcome.

And yes Phil, I absolutely agree, there is a lot of work required to organize these trips and then chase people around for half a year trying to collect the money.

Thank you Rick!   slt

That is true, but it also means he has never fished on the Gambler with Captain Bob. I went on a Mud hole wreck trip with them and Captain Bob took 10 of us out 50 miles as he wanted to do a recon trip for the upcoming weekend.  We killed the cod that day and I also discovered that day that fresh cod have parasitic worms in them.     cfzd  5hrug

The Gambler has one of the best Captains, crews and reputations of any boat I have fished on.

The boat has a 26 foot beam for stability and also has underwater lights built into the hull to attract bait, which will attract the tuna.

Bob G  chrz slt

I think we will leave it at the 20% and if we get poor service, we have a 5 hour ride home to discuss it and make an adjustment.

Some of you know I have no problem making a point of poor service, but if they work hard for us they should be rewarded for it.

In an e-mail from Capt Bob he said

"A minimum tip of 10% for the deckhands will include fish cleaning and all other services that the mates would typically provide."

I guess I should have mentioned the 20% tip day one, just didn't think of it.

I say we assume 20% tip.  If they do a bad job donate the difference to NJSWF banquet for next year, or hell just give it to Rick for the troubles of putting this trip together in the first place.  Although if it's the latter I suspect Rick might be hiding the bait and tripping the mates every chance he got  ovrbt  rofla

If you charter a 6 pack boat overnight....usually everyone kicks up 100 a person tip for a single deckhand/2nd captain depending on the size of the boat.
I think 75 a head for 3 deckhands to help out is a great thing!

Title: Re: 2014 NJSWF Tuna Trip

You have to keep in mind that the mates will be confined to the vessel for the 24 hours that you guys will be on it AND they will be there before and after the trip. They will probably put in well over the 24 hour trip time.
Break it down to an hourly rate and it doesn't sound so bad.  TT^

But, as was previously said, considering they do a good job. But there is no reason to believe that they won't.  t^

Plus you have to figure the boat is paying them as well maybe $150..$200 bucks + the $700 tip each...They're not just getting paid by our tips...

It's a pretty healthy tip...They better earn it...

5/0's  :headscra:  Did I miss something between 4/0 & 6/0 ?

I'm fishing a 6/0 & 30T. (righty, since I have yet to find a 6/0 in lefty). Spinner for throwing bucktails at Mahi, just in case. This same rod will also handle throwing a squid jig for some fresh live bait. Speaking of live bait, half a dozen Spot in an aerated 5 gallon bucket might be following me aboard as well.

Ms Fish will also be joining us.   msfsh

The last time we did this trip I received a bunch of calls and PM's to find out how much you paid. So this time I put your payment on the first post of this thread. Find your name and that is what you gave me.

Also please have your first payment to me no later then Apirl 19Th.

Hey Rick....
Whats the rule on using braid on this boat?
I dont want to lose my bunk or something  ;D

I emailed Capt. Bob about using braid because I thought they had allowed it in the past for jigging.  Apparently they changed their policy.

Here's his response:

"The problem with braid, is that when tangled and a mate has the line in hand, a fish could grab the line and cut the mates hand. That's the main concern. We've had some close calls so finally had to make a determination."

I also asked about the rental gear and got this:

"Rods are good, basic, 50lb class with 6/0 and 80lb mono."

Guys
I have not heard from a few of you.
I have sent PM's and emails.
If you want out, please let me know. It's no big deal, but I have to give a replacement time to get me their money by April 19th.

If I do not have at least $120.00 from 24 people by April 19 I will have to call off the trip.

I have no problem waiting till the 19th for the money. Most of the unpaid guys have texted, pm'ed or emailed me to let me know the money is on the way.  t^

There are only a few that I have not heard from. I just don't want to wait till the 19th to say X number didn't pay and they are out.

So if you are one of the few, please send me a pm and just let me know that you are on it and you are still in.

Thanks

Well Boys, had to bail from the trip (along with 2 others I had planned!!!).

Job opportunity landed in my lap that I just couldn't pass up.  Big schedule change and I have to fly the straight and narrow as the low man on the pole.

My bud Ray will still be going. Doesn't post here but some may remember him from the last trip.  Ridiculously huge Tiagra reel, sleeping in the bow while deep dropping swords (TRYING anyways.. ;D)

Good luck all, if ya haven't been out with Bobby, Mike and crew, your gonna love it. Great guys!

Phil, thanks to your buddy for filling in, appreciate it.

For now its weekend fishing only until black Friday.

Knock em dead guys.

The Black Friday reference makes me think you might be in retail. But weekends off suggests otherwise. That is, unless you are now a district manager.  ;)

Oh we are a go!
I have sent capt. Bob $6000.00 so far. We do not get it back unless he calls the trip off due to weather or if we want to lose our $6000.00.

If someone else backs out and we can not fill that spot they will loose the money they paid and we all have to split the difference that is due.

The total for the trip is $435.00
The very first post shows how much you have paid.

Just curious with the catch.. Do you keep the fish or does the Captain keep it, or a % of it.. I am just curious on how that works... Also, on a good to average day, does everyone at least catch 1 fish each.  From watching wicked tune, sometimes they don't catch anything for over a week..
Title: Re: 2014 NJSWF Tuna Trip
Post by: BigAl13 on September 12, 2014, 11:37:46 PM
the catch if your lucky enough is yours to keep. No not everybody will catch a fish or even hook up with one for that matter. Last year there were 3 tuna and 2 swords on the entire boat. the night before our trip they had 1 sword and no tuna. Hopefully the ocean will offer a plentiful catch for all. Last year the ones lucky enough to catch fish were generous enough to share there catch with the rest of us

It's fishing and some days are better then others.

Also two swords and three tuna shared with 20 something guys made two meals for my family.

I was reading on the farm just yesterday that guys like to bring their own flouro to make up their leaders.  Should we bring any of that?  There are a couple shows going on down here where I can probably look to pick some stuff up. swivels, hooks, leader, etc.  the only thing I haven't really been able to find at the few shows I've been to here already is weights. Should we be looking for any of that stuff?

They will have it all on the boat for sale.
If we get into a good bite and the mates are busy, you might want to bring your own just so you can get back in the water faster.

Egg sinkers above the swivel, leader (floro) if you wish to hook.
Hooks 4/0 - 8/0 bait hook most will use 6/0

Hello men. The crew of the Gambler is excited about our upcoming canyon trip with the NJ saltwater crew. One of the questions that was asked: do we provide rigs? Yes, we have basic 80lb with a mustad 6/0 beak hook and a 100lb rated barrel swivel. If anyone needs a rod and reel, we have that too.

Bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Boots and foul weather gear suggested. Bring your favorite jigs and a 20/30 lb class rod for mahi. There may be a chance to fish for tilefish and if you want to try that, bring a set-up that can hold 300 yards (1500ft) of 60lb braid. We will have some tile rigs and sinkers on board but that does cost extra.

The ride out: If we go 90 miles @ 20 knots will take us 4.5 hours (may take up to another 1.5 hours of searching with our electronics before we stop).

This will be a good trip. We have an excellent, experienced crew and the Gambler is a great vessel.

I don't get into the office too much because, thankfully, I'm usually on the ocean. But you can e-mail me at captbogan@aol.com and I will respond when I get back into the office at least once a week.

Looking forward to seeing you guys.

Capt Bob

With just a week to go I would like to remind everyone the boat leaves at 3:00 pm. Not get to the boat at 3PM.

If you get a flat or something please let someone know so we don't leave without you.

If your buddy is the type of guy who needs a wake up call, please make sure you give him a wake up call.  pawle  ovrbt

Capt. Bob said he will text me if we are a no go due to weather. If that does happen I will post it here. I can't text 23 people

If you need a rod, it is included along with the first rig. Let a mate know when you get on the boat and they will get you a rod. the boat will have rigs available for sale if needed.

Everyone gets a bunk.
You might want to bring a pillow and a blanket or sleeping bag.

There is a microwave on the boat. Mike said he would bring a Keurig, but I have not seen a post from him lately saying that is a fact.  5hrug

Any questions ?

4 to 7ft seas is nothing,  I'll bet we are still going,  here is the report from last weekend:

:Oct 3rd, 2014

The Gambler was offshore with the NJfishing.com community on Weds/Thursday. The seas were forecast 5 to 9 feet, which is not-nice weather but fishable for a boat like the Gambler. The ride off was okay and we made good time.

One party boat returning from a trip gave us some good intel and the area they fished, so we headed directly to that spot and threw anchor around 2PM. We had a nice break in surface temp that went 71F, 72F and finally found the 73.3F that we were looking for.

We did not see too much until the sun went down and we landed a nice longfin on butterfish bait by 7:30. We then fought a couple of sharks and a sword and caught another longfin around 9PM.

I was steadily reading tuna and bait marks on my finder, anywhere from 50 to 250 ft below. Myself, the crew and some of our customers tried hard to jig up some fish but had no success. I thought if we could hang in there, the tunas would eventually turn on. But by midnight, the only thing that turned on was the wind and rain.

When we had left the dock, the seas were forecast 5 to 9 feet but they were more like 8 to 12s. By 1AM there were only 2 guys left fishing. So I made the call and we came home (turning it into a 24 hour trip, I gave the guys and gal vouchers towards another trip). Shame but  that's just the way it goes sometimes. Our next trip is scheduled for tonight and it sounds a bit lumpy again but it's a go.

Our weekends are pretty well filled up but still have some spots open on weekdays.

So I was able to borrow a spinning set up for jigging
The reel is loaded with braided line.
What would be best options for a leader?
Are wind on leaders difficult ?

pawle , store bought wind-ons are the easiest way to go (Shimano makes them).  If you can tie a bimini twist then you just loop the end of the wind-on to the bimini.

You could use other knots as well.  I use the GT/Sebile knot on a lot of my rigs.  Here's a good video of it below.

If there was more time I would tell you to send me the spool and I would tie it up for you.  I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to learn on the ride out.  Either that or just ask the mate to do it. TT^

Positive fishing karma, winds diminishing, still 4-7, no big deal on this boat, been out with them before in similar conditions. A little bouncy but not too bad. "The 30 second bimini" is a great knot and very strong when tied properly. Have used on plenty of jigs this year w/o fail.

Sorry, your forecast updated quicker than mine...I get raw data straight from the NWS FTP servers. The forecast you posted was the same as the forecast to 20nm before the update. 20nm and east was showing 4-7 feet still. My data did not update rgmn. Inshore to 20nm has come down to around 2-3 feet, down from the 3-5 feet earlier today.

THis is a good thing, the seas did come down a few feet. BW is saying closer to 4 feet at Hudson Canyon, as opposed to 3-6 feet by the NWS. This is much better than 4-7. Saturday Afternoon is going to be the worst of both days...

Hello Men. I am as excited as you for our trip.

The Gambler canyon trip that was chartered by Grumpy's tackle shop of Seaside Mon/Tuesday was a great trip with a good catch of longfin and yellowfin tuna. It was a sporty ride off but, thankfully, Ponytail Mike said to keep plowing through it. Had to take it a little easy so we got onto the west wall around 1:30.

As I was coming back on the anchor, I saw tuna marks on the recorder. The temp jumped to 72.2F (66F inshore). Lots of Sargasso weed. We had our first fish on-and-off within 20 minutes of set.

During the dark we picked slowly at longfin and yellowfins. I was steadily reading fish under the boat anywhere from 50 to 250 feet. Just before day-break, the bite broke lose. Slamming 30 to 50lb longfin and 50 to 80lb yellowfin on jigs and bait. Around 6:30 we hooked into a 150lb-ish blue marlin that parted the line near the boat.

After 7AM, we hooked into a fish about every 15 minutes. The marks never left my screen.

Everyone did a great job and it was a fun group of guys and gals --true fishermen. Most everyone landed a couple tuna, a couple guys had 4 and two guys struck-out (nothing they did wrong, just happens).

The Gambler is off on a 48 hour canyon safari right now, won't be back till Friday morning.

Weather looks okay for your trip. We'll have food on board but bring whatever you'd like. There is a microwave on the galley counter that you can use to heat something. Free coffee is always on (High Test, Cowboy style). We have jigs on board but if you have 6 to 12 oz, def bring them.

See you on board

Capt Bob

Take care of the Dominican sensation Ray-Rod for me...I'm sure he will be doing the deep-drop- light-stick-swordie thing all night with his Tiagra 50.

Rick, thanks for everything....covering the spot and the diesel info (sorry inside thing).

While the evening was drawing
The fishermen went to bed
Laying there yawning,
with visions of tuna circling in their head.
Hooking a nice fish became the endless quest
But for now wishing all, a good night rest!!

Good luck and tight lines to everyone going on this trip.   slt   clp For those who have never fished on the Gambler, you have chosen one of the best party boats in this area to do your trip on.  The Gambler is a tank and has a 25 or 26 foot beam. The Bogan name goes back many, many years in NJ fishing history.

Someone has done some good praying as the marine forecast has improved with this morning's forecast.
