Title: shimano symetre issues
Post by: cricker on April 22, 2014, 01:16:38 PM
i got a shimano symetre 3000 back in March and have had issues with it causing knots when i cast, i noticed that it is due to the line getting caught on the line roller support cover (the black piece on the bail right before the line roller) which causes it to get wrapped around the spool lower then it should, has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

Any chance the reel came with little washers that are for shimming the spool out?

Can you take a picture showing where it's getting hung up?

sorry the picture is blurry, theres the black piece it gets caught on, it causes it to get returned to the spool unevenly, it doesnt happen every time but enough to be annoying

Judging from your picture, it looks like they changed the bail design from the previous version to this one.  Unfortunately, it looks like there really isn't much you can do to fix it.

The only thing I would suggest is getting into the habit of closing the bail manually and making sure the line is seated properly on the roller before starting your retrieve.  This is something I do on all my reels.  It might feel awkward at first, but after you do it for a while it will become second nature.

Hope that helps. t^

thanks for the input, i always close the bail manually, i dont think its good for the reel to close it by reeling, its just really annoying that i have to worry about this with a $100 reel, especially as much as i use it

Have you tried calling Shimano customer service for an answer?  I googled your problem and could not find any posts anywhere mentioning it which was weird.  I always feel that when you have a problem, it has happened to someone else, and there is an answer on the web somewhere.

Good luck in finding an answer.

i emailed shimano explaining what was going on and looked up the part number for that plastic piece so they knew exactly what i was talking about, that was two days ago and i havent heard anything, i have read some reviews where people complain about line twist problems with the reel, im wondering if its from the same thing and they dont realize it, debating on returning it

update:

i finally got around to putting the new bail on that shimano sent, i noticed theres a spot that looks kinda shaved down on the new one that wasnt on the one i bought the reel with where the line was getting caught, after using the reel a few times it certainly helped the issue but didnt completely fix it,

overall i really like the reel, probably the best spinning reel ive owned, has amazing casting ability, smooth drag and smooth operation, at this point ive caught a keeper striper and 2 keeper fluke on it
