With all the talk of Jigs Rigs and Lures on the forum, I thought it would help a lot of readers if we could post up some Pictures of your favorite Tackle along with a brief description on

i had good success with clark spoons during the spring run. slow trolled with 6ft of mono leader, and also trolled with 6oz drail wieght for a little extra depth.

also had good luck with hopkins hammered finish in silver or gold, and white drone lures. can't find pics, but they are similar to the clarks, just not diamond shaped, fished the same way.

This is my latest passion. Butterfly jigging was developed in Japan over 15 years ago. Using the jig properly requires a moderate action rod, a high speed reel, such as the Torium 16,(http://store.jbtackle.com/istarimages/p/t/pt-TOR16!SHIM.jpg) and braided line.

The actually jigging technique is an agressive rhythmic lift and wind which makes the jig "walk the dog" underwater. It can be used on all types of fish, from bottom fish to pelagics. My targeted species is Striped Bass. ;D

Thanks Bob for the heads up the slight confusion in the leader that has been changed as well as the spell check. Its funny I ran spell check in Word and it did not pick up the misspelling in bucktails the first time around good spot thanks again. grtn

When I target weakfish(which I most often do) in northern Barnegat Bay, the Point Pleasant Canal, and the Manasquan River, this is all I carry with me:

Pink Fin-S Fish in 4 and 5 inch sizes, and jig heads in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 oz sizes. A hook sharpener and a few snap swivels completes things. I cut the barbs off the shank of the jig heads with a cutting pliers, as the Fin-S has a narrow body unlike the shad baits and the barbs tend to rip up the body. If I am working the rocks at the inlet I'll generally add to this, jigs in 1 3/8 and 1 5/8 oz sizes.
I use light tackle spinning, and prefer a 7 foot meduim action very stiff and fast graphite rod, and 12 pound test line. A very stiff and fast acion graphite rod is the key, and obviously, light line negates the use of heavier jigs to hold bottom.
Since a Fin-S inherently has no action, it has to be created by the angler in jigging it in. A pink Fin-S imitates a tapeworm, one of a weakies favored meals. I cast it, let it sink to the bottom, and then with the rod, pull it back towards me in 5 short pulls, with the rod tip straight in front of me and by the fifth pull the rod tip is to my left in the 8 o clock position. Reel in the slack and start again, all the way back to me, over and over and over, cast after cast. I try to make the Fin-S glide through the water, as a tapeworm would in the current, each pull should bring it about 6-8 inches off the bottom and move it about a foot foward as it settles back down.

I've been hearing a lot of talk about fish-finder rigs. I bought a package of them, but I'm not really sure how to use them.
The fishfinder goes on the main line about a snapswivel? Weight on the fishfinder and hook/rig on the swivel? Also, where do I use these...from the beach, bayshore, pier, boat, etc..?
Can one of you guys post a picture of one of these all tied up and ready to go?

Adesai, you are correct. The fishfinder goes onto the main line.
Put the line thru the hole in the fishfinder. (Some people put a bead on either side of the fishfinder. The one above the fishfinder will keep the fishfinder from going thru the rod tip. The bead after the fishfinder will keep it from jamming in the snap swivel).
Tie on the snap or snap swivel after the fishfinder is on your line. Attach your leader w/hook onto the snap or snap swivel.
You can use this rig in most any bait fishing situation, boat, surf, etc.

You are correct one way is to slip it on your main line with a bead on both sides like Joe mentioned. What I also do is to tie a snap swivel to the main line and make up a number if fish finder rigs to have in case I loose them. The way I tie them is as follows.
What you will need:
2 Beads (I use red but any color is OK)
2 Snap swivels 100#
2 swivels 90#
1 Fish Finder slider ( I use a Braid resistant one)
It sounds like a lot of work but if you loose a number of rigs you will find it easier to replace, especially at night.
Tie a snap Swivel to the main line. Tie up a regular swivel and a snap swivel by using anywhere from 18 - 30 inches of 40# test mono or fluorocarbon leader ( I use Fluorocarbon almost invisible underwater)But make sure you slide on a bead before and after the slider. In this case the slider does not get caught up in the knot on either end or break the line. To this attach a rig you make up by using another swivel 18" leader and a circle hook of choice ( I use a Gakaketsu 6/0 or larger).
The knots I use are as follows. On the swivels I use a Uni and on the hook I use a Palomar knot. I got use to tying the Palomar only because it is easier to tie in the dark.
I mention a circle hook because you will probably place your rod into a sand spike and relax (hopefully not to long). When the fish takes the bait and runs with it the hook will slide our of its gut with out damage and embed itself into the lower jaw of the fish. I have used them successfully for a long time now and they really help with the mortality rate if you are catch and release like I do.
Sorry guys I keep thinking of things to add. Make sure you set your drag just tight enough as not to slip. This way when you get that big cow on she won't take your entire rig for a swim. If you are using a circle hook there is no need to set the hook hard and cross its eyes so to speak. Let the hook do its job. then all that is needed is a nice steady retrieve and allow the wave action help you bring her on shore.

I pour these jigs (ultra jig, same as Spro) and dip them in white paint for a base coat. I then pass them off to a friend who paints the finish coat and ties the hair. He keeps what he wants and gives the rest back to me for my use.

Nice set of jigs you got there. I am waiting for some natural deer tails to arrive. If they don't get here soon I will have to buy a couple all I have left are yellow.

Nice pattern, I wonder if the red and black are the keys to the teaser. Being red looses its color first it will turn a shade of gray just like the backs of many bait fish and the black stripes are at the top of the backs of them as well.

Not at all.
It's a mix of Hot Orange, Fluor. Yellow with some Black Holographic Flashabou on the back.
It's a Fluke KILLER.

For the 2 and 3 oz we found the 8/0s were really big. espeicially for the 2 oz.. We modified the mold a little so the 2oz now uses a 6/0 and the 3 oz uses a 7/0.. and the Mustad 32786BLN is good hook to use too..
For the 2,3 & 4 ouncers, Mustad 91715
For the 5,6,& 8 ouncers, Mustad 3407. Also need a #2 eyelet.

Thanks for the info flukedood. I haven't made any in the 2 oz because I do most of my fluking in deeper water and need the heavier weight. How did you modify the mold? I will have to give it a try as I now have a smaller boat that I can use in the backwaters and will be using the smaller jigs. t^

to modify t just take a small file and sand down the tit where the hook sits ,it doesnt take much just a little and it will work great,there will be a small amount of lead around the eye of the hook but it pulls right off

Last year we used the 1 1/2 and 2 oz sizes just about everywhere.. 8 lb fireline crystal was the way to go. it has 3 lb Mono diameter and a breaking strenght of over 20 lbs.. Like I said we fished the smaller sizes and held bottom on most days with no problem even in Ambrose and the seagirt reef..

I Love it. With 8 lb Fireline Crystal you can really hold bottlom with those lighter bucktails..
What material are you using on your teasers?? is that bucktail or yak hair??

I use all kinds of materials some are Yak hair yes.
Bucktail, Ice Wing Fiber, Icelandic Sheep, etc.
I like to try different combos out and see what I can come up with.

I agree AJ, I have been on a lot of other boards and found this one to be the most open and honest. It a tribute to all those that give their output freely and can take criticism openly.
Any question worth asking is worth an honest answer, especially with more and more youngsters signing up. I feel it is my duty to give openly just as those that have taught me over the years.

Correction: The SOBs I was referring to was the mis informed people (Politicians) that set up these new regs.and limits that are hurting everybody in the SportFishing Arena.
They really do not have a clue and relied on BAD information and data and stats. they were false and inaccurate.

Great thread everyone. I'm really learning alot. Went to Wal-Mark today to pick up some tackle. Actually quite nice, fully stocked shelves, etc.
Anyway, I was there for the basic stuff and planned on heading to the local tackle store for the good stuff. Anyway, while I was there I ended up scoring some lures that I heard about form you guys.
I was looking for the AVA 047 Diamond Jigs and the others that were mentioned and couldnt find AVA anywhere. I bought 2 4 oz diamond jigs that were there made by Hurricane. Is this the same, junk, better? Is AVA a brand or a type. I'm clueless. As always, someone please help, haha.

It is the same, just made by the hurricane company! As long as all the hardware looks solid, you should be fine!

I seem to recall reading somewhere a while back that AVA was the original maker of the diamond jigs and now it is more of a generic name for them. Don't know that for a fact though.

Basically they are both the same except that the difference in the Diamond Jig and the AVA Jig is that the AVA's corners are softer and more round giving it a more fluttering action. But the main difference is the true AVA has the addition of a swivel which gives it a much different action.
The Diamond Jig was the first to come along and then the AVA style followed. And Joe I would have to say your right when today the two are names are interchangeable just like Xerox when it comes to copiers. The different manufactures may have different specs and altered amenities but they are still copiers, whereas both the Diamond and the AVA are both Jigs

Ok, no action on the diamond jigs. Just to check I'm working it correctly, drop it in to the bottom and bounce it along the bottom as you drift correct? Seemed as if no one else was getting anything either. Maybe the stripers havent moved down here just yet.

From all reports I'm hearing it was a tough jig bite this weekend.
I was out yesterday & we found a nice concentration of working birds, had enormous amount of bait and fish lightening up the machine but they were moving fast and other than a sea robin caught nothing on jigs (didn't see any other boat hook up as well).
Your retreive was correct but sometimes varying your retrieve will draw a strike....slow bounce, to fast bounce or drop to bottom a burn the jig back or a couple of fast turns of the reel handle followed by some slow ones...keep changing until you find something that works.

So don't leave it boucing on the bottom, bounce it some then retrieve and drop again? Maybe thats what I was doing wrong. My dad had clam strips on a fishfinder and picked up a bunch of skates and some robins but I had nothing at all. Water was 62 and I didn't see many signs of life. Some on the fishfinder, but not a whole lot of birds if any.

Oh and my other question. I have some spoons and other lures, but I only know how to use them on the surface. Ie - cast out and give it some action on the retrieve. How can I use a spoon in a lower water column? Put weight on with it? That doesnt seem right.

If the spoon is heavy enough it will sink to the bottom. If not, you will need a heavier spoon or lure. That way you can work it on the retrieve and it will stay lower. You can also go with swimming lures, like bombers or rapalas. People are having decent luck with Bass Kandy Delights and Fin S also. As for trolling lures, the others will have to chime in and explain!

for fluke i use a medium action rod and a spinning reel with 10 lb mono or braid.
i usually jig a 1/8-1/2 ounce jig head (depending on the current) with a gulp jerkshad. The key is to keep it on the bottom. This method works great for finicky fluke.

Where are you guys getting the straight tubes like Jeff posted? I've seen guys with teasers above the diamond jigs that looked like that and was wondering where to get them. Maybe just make my own?

Try these. They are called Amazing Worms by Zing. Good for replacing worn out tube tails on the back of your diamond jigs as well. t^

I've had good luck on the Deadly Dick Silver and green not so much on the other colors. Also got rid of the treble hook. ;D
