Title: Flukin' 9/3 Eve. PB C & R!!!
Post by: wb on September 03, 2015, 10:19:22 AM
Wind had us drifting North in 45ft near the SHC last night when I felt a-pecking  on my favorite 8oz white MaiTai SuperGuppy,  tipped with Cancun’s finest Peruvian schmelt. On the 4th peck I dropped the hammer and it was a good fish. This hack was outclassed. A powerful resistance; I thought maybe a large ray or a drumfish. Tombo thought Hefty Bagfish.
Game on. I must have had him in a good spot, because I was able to play him expertly for what felt like a half hour. Even with my reel basically locked down for flukin, he was pulling drag at will. After about 5min of tug of war I was able to coax him to the boat and get a look at the prehistoric beast. Of course there is no scale reference in the pic, but think ”shell sized like a red snow saucer“ and that may help. Yeah buddies, this guy was hundreds of lbs. Tombo tried his best to be ready with the net and shoot video- sorry for the poor quality frame grab. This guy was prolly older than us, with barnacles on his shell the size of my thumb to prove it. This guy coulda SWALLOWED our net.
After a textbook release boatside, Tom and I both knew that would be the excitement for the evening and no keeper flatties would grace the HB on this night. And we were right. Thankfully he reminded me of the need to replenish the fluids I lost battling my “Monster from the Deep,” and we quickly rehydrated (repeatedly.)

I can’t believe my tackle and rigging (and angling technique) held up. By far, my largest catch EVER. And that’s why I fluke with 150lb snap swivels and 30lb braid!
The biodiversity we have right here in our local waters is just amazing. What’s next? COME ON!
Thanks Tom!
