Title: Cabin Rod Holder Project
Post by: fellinger on September 08, 2015, 02:38:14 PM
So, the Kristy Marie (27 GW Sailfish) doesn't have enough rod storage for my liking so, I has asked Chris to help me out with coming up with a design. Chris and I met several weeks ago so he could get an idea of what I wanted and to take some measurements. We met up again and using scraps we mocked-up the holders

My only request was get me as much additional storage and for the system to be fairly easy to remove in the very rare instance I need room for two to sleep in the forward berth.

The aft portion will mount on a wood top that will be the same dimensions as the original starboard stove cover. The top of the aft section will be secured using existing mounting holes for the hardtop but, with larger bolts and wing nuts for the ability to remove the holder if needed. The overall width of the aft section will be narrower than what is in the pictures. Note the holder will accommodate 6 rods (including 30's and 50's) and 3 gaffs or harpoons or rods without reels. This increases storage to 10 rods (or 13 without reels).

The forward section will mount at the ceiling using the existing hardtop hardware with longer bolts and wing nuts for easy removal. There will be a horizontal support at the bottom that will mount with hardware through the floor of the walkway around the cabin.

There will be carpet on areas where rods touch and bungee straps to secure the reels and tips. We will most likely construct it out of pine and add heavy coats of marine varnish. The narrower design will allow easy rod storage and still allow you to access the OEM holders and window.

I can't wait for the finished project. I think Chris and I are going to be very happy with it although, I don't think he will ever do this again. LOL

Nice Fred.. I did something similar and can hold 9 rods on my port side.. But realized leaving them on the boat the first year taking a toll on them.. but great to store during a fishing trip t^

I'd love to do that but, couldn't because I have the fridge/stove/sink in the area. Not much other room because of the head.
