Title: sharks in the surf
Post by: gagedylan on June 21, 2008, 11:35:49 AM
i read in the APP that threshers and makos are coming close to shore, and guys fishing for blues and stripers are catching them. has anyone caught one in the surf?   is it even possible? just curious

We hooked up with several last year while fluke fishing. All you can do then is watch your line peel off the reel. Usually, the line will part when the tail hits it as the thresher is waving good bye.  ;D

if your interested in giving it a shot one night, drop me a line. i could set us up, with bait and chum. also with the line breakage issue,we can use 8 or 10 foot of wire leader if we have too and still get big baits out there. if we can hook up from the beach it would be alot of fun. i'm probally going to give it a shot on island beach, with peds advise. a10 or by the inlet.

Nick Honachefsky from the fisherman magazine reported being hooked up with a very large shark on Island Beach last week.In the Burlington county post friday june 27th he reports being taken for a ride by what he says was a a large dusky, brown or thresher shark that actually bit threw 125lb test wire leader. I would like to set this night up for next weekend, after the holiday. He goes on to explain that the feeling was insane, an 11 foot surf rod crippled over and reel screaming. we have to do this. anyone intrersted in next weekend drop me a line.

Actually, next weekend might be the best bet for me, since I will be working Monday through Friday, 7 pm to 7 am this coming week. that means I would have to sleep during the day next Saturday, and would be wide awake for some night time fishing. Let me know what you guys want to do. I guess I am in trouble with 30 lb test!  ???

I wish I could do Friday, but I cannot cut outta work....it is overtime for me and I cannot afford to miss twelve hours of time and a half...  :'( ... But I hope that you guys can work out another trip later in the year....I will look forward to hear about this trip and it will give you guys the chance to work the kinks out! Paul, I am pretty sure Saturday works for me and I will have some other available days as well that week. I will send you my schedule later and we can decide what night is good.

that stinks sean, i know all about overtime though. we will start setting up around 7 oclock friday in the area of a10 out on island beach. i'm pretty sure that there will be a nice showing of people, i have recieved a bunch of emails. mabey even a film crew. my house smells like a fish factory i was blending bunker up last night, making chum blocks. i will be bringing a generator, lights, and i think even a grill. anyone who would like to join us is welcome. we will have 3 surf rockets with us, so we can get lots of chum out there, and people can use them while we are doing our thing. my main goal is too hook up with a nice shark, but with all that chum you never know what will show up. if you would like to use your rod with our system please have a min of 30lb braid spooled up.  hey paul did you read that article nick wrote in the paper. if he got broke off with 125lb wire what do you think i should use. i'm planning wire with a haywire twist, what do you think.  its sharkin time, i need that kiss, lol.

Hey Surfrocket,

125# wire should be enough.  I don't think it was the weight of the fish but the thrashing of its head and twisting of its body that snapped the wire.  I would think heavy Flouro or mono would be just as good if not better only because unlike wire the flexing back and forth will not heat up the flouro enough to cause it to weaken and break like wire.

Sufix makes a leader line up to 650# if you need it that heavy.  You would use heavy duty crimps to secure it to whatever you use with a loop.

Only my own personal opinion.

Paul

sean i really hope you can make it. as for the whole event thing, people always say they are showing up, but most usually dont. with this though there has been alot of hype about sharkin from the surf so i guess we will see. eithery it should be a great time. i have 150# floro, i think. do you really think that will be sufficiant. i am going to make the baits up a few ways, i just dont want to loose the fish. i dont want over kill either though. paul what about lead, big sinkers or free float them. when you free float them they move in the current real fast. i can set up the baits on 6 foot plus of leader after the sinker. also should we use whole bunker or big chunks. bigger bait bigger fish. i can also set up bluefish chunks. i will have bunker and bluefish chum made up. let me know what you think.

thats great sean.I was talking to my cousin, who if you can get past the fish stories is one of the best fisherman I know. he said to use 100# to 125# wire leader no longer than 18 inches attached to a longer floro leader, and use a 10 ''o'' circle hook. he claims in the early 70's and threw the 80's he caught makos on 20lb mono. I said fish stories but who knows.I was able to net up 20 more big bunker yesterday, now i just need to make more molds.I think i'm creating a monster my daughter was grinding them up last night in the blender for me. I'll tell ya its funny she is four, she cant tye her shoes but she can make up a high low rig. tye the loops. its funny she could tell you anything you want to know about fishing and drag racing.and then ask you to paint her nails, lol. anyway if there are sharks in the area we should do ok.

I will be out there around 7 pm, you can ride in with me if you would like. to just be able to drive in the park i dont think it costs that much, but you would have to walk on. i can meet you inside or outside what ever you perfer. my cell # is 732 406 6879, you can get me pretty much anytime, unless im working in the jail. no cell phones allowed inside. this really should be a great night.i need to finish making up the chum and start making the rigs.

It sounds like I will be able to be there for the festivities just let me know the spot and time, I think you said around A10.  That is a good spot as there is a nice hole right off the sign.  Just give me a time.

Sean if you want to ride with me on the beach let me know and we can meet up somewhere up here.  As far as Google maps just get onto Rt 37 east and go all the way across the bridges stay to your right and follow that around till the road straightens out and look for Grumpys right after the first traffic light it is on the left.  Park in the middle (median) and I will either be waiting or if Grumpys is open, inside BSing.

Or if you want you can meet me at my home and we can ride there from here. I am only about 10 or so minutes from Grumpys in Toms River  I can PM you my address.

Paul

sean, i got your pm this morning, for some reason i couldnt respond. any way, i will have anything you guys will need, bait and rigs. if you would like to bring stuff to fish the surf without the sr thats cool too. i think i may even bring a set up or two to do the same. i picked up enough stuff today at lunch to make up 25 rigs with bait. thats hooks leaders the whole schabang. i just may need to pick up more lead not sure yet though. i will have all the launchable stuff so dont worry with that. Paul I will be out there around 7pm starting to set up. in the area of a10 as we discussed. i will have a blue and white ford pickup and a red expadition. we can make a fire out there in that area right?? i will try to get more stuff to make up more baits,we will see time wise. making up all this stuff is alot of work with my schedual.i will freeze up the baits on thursday night keeping those bunker fresh as possible, and will try to set some shots up for fresh chunks. with all the chum i plan on popping out there the surf may be loaded with fish, never no. i dont know if we will need more than 25 big baits to launch out there but i will give it my best. you guys got my number call any time or even text me if you want. i have a date with my daughter now talk to you guys in a bit.

Thanks Paul and Ken,

This trip is going to be an educational trip for me so I am gonna bring just about everything that I own and have you guys take a look and tell me what is what. Some of the things that I have are no-brainers, but some of it is old and I am not sure if it is even worth keeping. I have always fished from boats and this year is the first year that I have been surf fishing in a big way. I am enjoying myself, but I also haven't had the best of luck since I have not caught anything that most people would consider "worth keeping". Anyhow, you guys are gonna be my "YODA and OBI-WAN" Friday night. As for a ride onto the beach, I should probably meet you guys at the park and ride in with whoever from there. I am the type of guy who likes to stay until no-one else wants to stay, so I need a ride outta the park with the "LAST MAN STANDING" if that is OK!I am also kinda nervous about how long it will take me to get there considering it will be a FRIDAY NIGHT and I am not sure what the Shore Traffic is gonna be like coming from my house. I have to come both North and East....Any suggestions on time to leave and how to go, send me the map!

Hi Sean,

The directions are fairly simple.  Take Rt 73 to Rt 70 East.  Stay on 70 till you reach the 70 Rt 37 circle.  Take Rt 37 East all the way till you come to a Y in the road stay to the right as this will be Rt 35 south. follow this all the way to the park. Two hints, 1) make sure to stick to the speed limit of 25 as they love to give out tickets along that stretch and 2) stay in the left lane as there are lane changes in the right.

The access road to get onto the beach at that point would be A7.  There is a parking lot right there so if you want to access the park (5 or 6 bucks) and park there one of us can pick up up and transport you to the launch site (hahaha).

Or I could meet you at Grumpys where you can park and we can put your things into the expedition and ride into the park.  It is up to you.

Any questions feel free to call, 732-684-0385.

Paul

i think those directions are right on the money. my fingers are really sore i tied 50 haywire twists with that wire, today. ouch.lol. i am going to try and make another 25 rigs tomorow, have to get back to the store almost out of supplies. my new name should be assembly line, lol. for the actual baits i'm not getting the bunker until thursday, to keep up on the freshness. i need to give tom at grumpys tomorow a shout,to make sure he will have 50 fresh bunker for me to make the baits. otherwise i will have to launch the boat thursday after work and go net me some up. i hope thats not the case but what ever. WERE GOIN SHARKIN, from the beach. I cant wait. I also need to grab more lead, paul do you think i should make all the baits with big weights. i plan on putting 6 to 8 ozs on each rig, but do you think we will be ok if i use 3 and 4 ozs on some of them? the rigs i have made so far are 124 lb toothy wire 18 inches long, with  10 o gamis, octopuss, followed up by 6 foot of 100lb and 125 lb mono. i think we will be good with that. let me know what you think about the lead, mind you there is whole bunker on the hooks for the most part, mabey a few chunks.

Hey Ken,

I think 3's and 6's would be good enough as I would think you would want them to drift just a little.  If the current is running and just looked at the tides it will be going out where low will be a little after 9:30 PM. so your chum will be going out as well.  Will you be targeting closer to shore and firing the hooked bait out a little further?  Or just firing both the same?

Paul

One important thing guys, "DON"T FORGET THE BUG SPRAY", the "GREENHEAD FLIES and MOSQUITOES" are out in force this time of year.

It would be better if you wore long pants and a long sleeve shirt.  If it is hot then spray.

My choice is Deep Woods as it has the most amount of DEET in it at 25%

yeah know all about the flies, we can have a fire there right. hopefully that will help. thanks for the tide info, that was on my list. with the tide going out, what we will do is start chumming out far, and work our way in to the surf. then load it up just past the breakers and let the current pull it out. we will put the baits out as far as we can and let the slick keep running threw them. i will be putting pics up in a few of my chum mess.

Can't wait to see the mess! Sharks are know for there sense of smell, so is deet a real good idea? I am guessing if you want a big fish, you have to put up with a few mosquito bites! I have firewood at home that I can bring if you would like me too. Also, I would like to bring food for the fire since you have done so much for this trip already. Let me know what you think!

here is the mess, lol. i'm sure these pics will help me with the ladies, lol. yeah sean bring what you would like, we are bringing some dogs and sodas, i will never turn away good eats. i will also be bringing wood for the fire, its gonna be a long night, so anything will help. i will be out there till the end as well, so dont worry about the ride off to your car. if we catch something good mabey we can plan a bbq. ive never kept a shark before, but that story about the lemon peppered shark on the george made my belly rumble, lol.

I will make sure to bring some " Good Eats " and firewood as well. I have your phone number saved in my cell, so I will call you when I hit the road on Friday, and I will give Paul a shout as well. The directions seem easy enough, but I am a bit concerned about traffic since it is a Friday and you never know what to expect when heading towards any of the NJ shore points! I will be sure to get an early start and if I get there before everybody, then I will just hang out until one of you guys gets there to pick me up. See you at Grumpys?  Or at A6-7 Parking Lot?

If grumpy,s works for everybody, and I won't get towed outta there, than that is fine with me. I will be able to do a little browsing while I wait, and we can go from there. If I gotta pay a couple of bucks to get into the park to make things easier, well that is fine too. You guys just tell me what to do and I will do it. Thanks Yoda, Thanks Obi Wan... I look forward to learning the ways of the force!

Either way works Sean Skywalker.

If you want to brows around Grumpys thats OK I will probably be there round 6:30 or so.  If you park just across the street in the center you will not get towed.  There is a 30 minute parking limit right in front of the store.

Again don't forget your bug spray.

I didn't know that, but that is good to know. I will look into it and see if it is worth it but I am guessing I would need them to inspect my truck for all of the safety crap and I wouldn't have time to get my act together. Will be getting a pass to drive on the beaches at Corson's Inlet in the fall, so maybe you guys can come down for a part two fishing trip for the fall stripers!

I'll be there. Yeah I have never been checked but you have to have a jack, plywood i think 16*16 inches, may be less a fire ext, first aid kit, tow rope, flash light, tire guage, and a shovel. hopefully by fall my life will have settled down and i can get more fishing in. have a good night buddy.

I am gettin excited for this like you wouldn't believe! There was confusion with my work schedule switch but I let everyone here know that if they think I am coming in tonight, my phone would be shut off, so head to the Atlantic and follow the chum slick and sooner or later they should be able to find me!!!   hhppy You may be onto something with the BUNKERTINI Idea! Park patrol would never smell the liquor on your breath at least ...  :-X  The weather reports are looking good and I will be meeting you guys at Grumpy's and catching a ride with whoever will have me. Hopefully a ride is not the only thing I catch tomorrow. I will see you guys there! Sweet dreams!

Its looking pretty good out there guys.  The wind right now is mostly out of the ESE which if that holds the bugs will be at a minimal.

Water Temps are in the low 60's close to the shoreline.  With todays air temps should give us some warmer water close in so we might not have to cast out to far, but if we have to it should be a good show of the surfrocket.

See you guys later.  I was over to Grumpys earlier and Ken he is still telling people that there is not a bunker to be had.  He told me that he will be getting more in later this afternoon.

I will let you know as I will be there around 6:30 and will wait for Sean.

Happy Catching

Paul

nope were here, we didnt even get eaten by flies.  NO DARN FISH, NOT EVEN A JUNK FISH. We did manage to chum in some dolphins, that may have been the excuse while they were around. But sean and i stayed the whole night and not a one fish. sorry we all did catch our share if jelly fish, lol. the night was a good one though, there was about 15 0r 20 of us out there. we had a fire, and plenty of good food.i must say sean and paul are great guys,i'm glad i had the oppertunity to have met them. my buddy rick had his telescope set up we were able to see the moon and saturn and its moons. like i said no fish but a great time. we are going to give it a shot again in the next month,so for anyone who missed us this time try and make the next one.

yeah i have a few pics try and get them up in a bit. i know sean had his camera workin so i'm sure when he gets the time he will get them up. it was too dark for my camera phone,so i didnt get that many pics. i think sean even tried to get video, rockets too fast, lol.i did hear that no-one out there really did anything that night, its weird not even a skate. i really wanted to see someone reel in a searobin from 600ft out, off the surf.the baits i made up for this trip were much larger than i normaly make. the molds i used were 8 and a half inches long, compaired to our regular ones wich are 4 and a half inches. and still we were spooling reels, lol. i still cant get the fish smell out of my hands, lol. it was a great night though.looking foward to the next one.

Hello Everyone,
I had a geat time not catching fish with Ken and Paul and the rest of the guys/gals that show up on the beach that night. I have been doing the family thing all weekend since this night trip, and I am going to try to take a nap before I have to go to work tonight, but I did want to get a couple of the pics up before I crashed. I will try to sign on tonight to see how everyone else made out this weekend. Paul and Ken were great fishin buds and I look forward to the next trip!

Hi All,

Ken & Sean I had a great time fishing with you guys.  It was a totally new and different fishing experience and I say that in a good way.

Watching Ken's Surfrocket throw a chum slick that any seasoned boat captain would be proud of and spooling Seans reel was impressive.  It was too bad that nothing was caught but jelly fish.  I know we tried our best and threw everything we had at them but it wasn't meant to be, THIS TIME.  Wait till the next time.

Sean, like I mentioned when ever you want to get out and learn the beach just give me a heads up I will be glad to have your company at any time.  Ken that goes the same for you.  You have to try and get your system to be a little more mobile as I like to roam the beach.  Maybe mount one on the bed of your truck on a swivel mount and really give the beach cops an eye full.s

Happy Catching

Paul
