Title: SHARKS IN THE SURF PART 2
Post by: surfrocket on July 21, 2008, 11:16:09 PM
Friday, Aug 1st we will be trying it again. Island Beach State Park, in the area of A-10. We will be out there around 7pm, and staying the entire night . We will be chumming the surf, and launching out baits with surf rockets.I will be suppling baits for everyone to use a surf rocket, just show up with your rod and reel. Hopefully this time we will have beter luck in the hunt for sharks in the surf. The first shark caught over 100lbs, that angler will recieve a complete surf rocket fishing setup. There may even be a local b&t store willing to give a custom rod to the person who can burry their scale. More info on that to come.
The last time we did this, everyone that showed up had a great time. We will have a fire going on the beach, and even a few grills. So bring your dogs, marshmellows,or what ever you would like and enjoy a family fun night on the beach fishing. Being a state park there are fees to get in the park. You can drive in the park and walk on the beach for around 10 dollars,i think they charge by the car,not per person. There is a parking lot by A-10,and a path out to the beach. If you would like to drive on the beach, I think the 3day pass is 50 dollars. They do not sell 1 day passes. You must have a 4*4 and all of the required saftey equipment. If its anything like last time there will be plenty of people to help people get on the beach.
With all the chum we plan on putting out there, we should bring the fish in.So with that in mind even if you wanted to come out and fish the surf with out the surf rocket,it should be pretty good. Hope to see you out there.

Hi Ken,

The price to get onto the beach is as follows:

Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend
Sat, Sun, holidays    7 A.M. - dusk    $10.00
Mon - Fri            8 A.M. - dusk    $6.00

off season
everyday            8 A.M. - dusk    $5.00

Make sure you are there before dusk if you are not bringing any fishing equipment, they will not let you on after dusk.  At that point you will have to call someone on the beach to get you on and off.  Parking out side the park is limited because of the restaurants they are packed this time of year.

There is a 3 day permit and you are correct it is $50.00

NO alcoholic beverages are allowed in the Island Beach State Park.

IBSP is a Carry in Carry Out Park, please bring plastic bags for your garbage.  There are usually garbage bins at all parking areas to dispose of your garbage.  I hate picking up after people so please keep this beautiful resource clean.

I hope this helps... grtn

Happy Catching

Paul

I have a beach pass so if anyone needs a ride in, I can help out.  But I'm not sure how long I'll stay, so I can't guarantee a ride out in the morning.
And I can supply some firewood for the cause.
Can't wait to meet everyone and learn.

Hi Ken,

When I was there over the weekend I did some scouting for you.  The parking area at A10 will hold about 12 or so cars depending on how close they park.  Walk in by the trail it should be about a 100 yard walk to the beach give or take.

See ya on Friday.

Happy Catching

Paul,

Got a question for you regarding 4X4 access.  My parents just got a rav4 and naturally, I had to inquire as to whether they'd let me borrow it for IBSP.  If we filled out the paperwork, including neccessary photocopies, via mail, will they then let me drive the vehicle on the beach?  My Dad (registered owner) wouldn't be with me.

Thanks, Paul.

Here is a copy of what is needed to get a permit.  It soulds like your Father has to do the paper work but as far as you using it on the beach being it si in the family I would think it is OK.

The MSFV Permit will be issued only to the registered owner of the vehicle. Your mailed application for a MSFV Permit must include a photocopy of the vehicle owner’s registration and driver license. Those who have a leased vehicle must also include a copy of the lease document page(s) that show(s) that the vehicle is leased to the permit applicant. Those who apply for the MSFV Permit in person at the Island Beach gatehouse do not need to provide photocopies, but will be asked to present original vehicle registration, driver license and lease documents.

I hope this helped.

Man what a bummer about your Dad.  It is always a good thing when they get released this early.  I am sure he will have follow up visits that should get him back on track.

My Dad was not that fortunate one day while at his desk working an a contract he had a massive heart attack and never recovered. this was about 19 years ago but you know we still miss the old guy.

I will be looking forward to meeting a bunch of new guys as well as some of the old crew. I posted this earlier about the A10 parking lot but here goes again. A10 will hold about 12 or so cars with about a 100 yard walk in.  Once on the beach just look for the herd we will be right there.

If anyone has trouble with that walk just give me a call and I will come out and pick you up.  I will be leaving about 2ish or so in the morning unless the bugs are too bad.

Make sure you bring bug spray as you never know.  Off Deep Woods works best that is what I use.  Sunday was a bear as I got bit even while airing down. the buggers did not give me time to spray up.

See you all there on Friday.

Happy Catching

Paul

HAHAHA, You might as well go and get a commercial unit the way you use that thing.

I am looking forward as well.  When Ahs and I were out it was slow again but I managed to pull out one fluke from the suds on the teaser using a Gulp shrimp in a natural color.  On the end I was using a bucktail with a 4" swimming mullet.

Should be fun but you got to try and keep the lights a little lower, them floods don't work on the beach to well.

Just looking at the tide for Fri Night, it will be high meaning very little beach will be left due to the storms that came through.  Be careful setting up.  Try to be as close to the marker as possible as the hole has narrowed a bit.

If you can try fishing in the slough you might pick up a fluke or stray striper.

Hey Rocketman, sorry to hear about your dad, but nice to know that he is doing good now.

Let me know how the wood chipper works on the bunker. I was thinking of getting one just for that purpose. I have heard of several people using the one from Harbour Freight with good results. Will you be chipping frozen bunker or will it be thawed?

thank you all so, much it means alot. i'm sure a wood chipper would work, lol. as for harbor frieght tools, they were not made for people like me,lol.anytime i have ever used one of their tools i break them quick.people tell me they have no problems but i sure doo.lol.

now the blender soga..................
no warantey, voided that with first bunker,i break them all the time. i need to stop being cheep and buy a comercial one. i am looking for an old meat grinder, electric. anyway my aunt brought this 1922 blender over, she claimed it leaked i needed to fix it. thank god for pack rats. leak is an understatement...... nine bunker into my chummin the darn thing let loose and exploded open. i was too pissed at the time to get pics, but if i did you all would be laughing for weeks. besides myself being totally covered in chum, its was on my celing, walls, floor coverd, in my cabinets,my dog poor thing covered in bunker guts.my lady friend who was over actually threw up helping me clean up the mess. there was a piece of bone and gill plate in my mini blinds.

so................... here i am done making chum for the night, i spent over an hour cleaning up the mess,lol.i.m laughing now,but trust me was i wasnt laughing when it happned.

Tom from grumpys is giving a custom rod to the first person to burry their scale friday night with a shark caught in the surf with us.  Friday night is the new. Moon and we will have a great tide. This weeks fisherman Nick Honachefsky reports hold on tight surf casters be on the look out for brown sharks and cowrays friday night. Let's hope he is right. Sounds like perfect conditions.

This should be interesting.  New Moon and high tide.  I hope that there is some beach left out there.  Just be careful as the drop offs have been nasty and you will be closer to the dunes than before.

If you decide to drive on please park perpendicular to the beach this way others will be able to get by.  Plus make sure you are legal for the beach the rangers did a stop by last time and checked tags.  Plus remember no alcohol.  I do not want to loose my tag as they can pull everyones.

It means to much to me.

yeah paul is right, it should be good. the cops did come last time, my fault too but nothing to do with the surf rocket. he actually enjoyed watching it launch out baits, i think thats what saved me,lol. no problems this time though.

i cant believe the conditions are this perfect, it looks like our chances are good this time. i have made larger chum blocks this time, with more big chunks but not enough to feed them. i am back on track with the blender, actually the lady friend i spoke of last night is here cutting up bunker, makeral, and herring as we speak.getting it ready for chumatinis. i must have done something right last night.

also being shark week makes this night that much more special. i will be sure to bring my camera this time, hopefully i will have time to take pics. i was pretty busy last time. i really look foward to meeting everyone and have a great time, with or with out fish. we are gonna hook up this time. hey rod mabey along with my chum you could call the sharks in with your guitar, lol. you can seranade them with your magical music, lol.  im going back to work its bunker on the menu here, and i got a date with the blender, and a hot chick to bat. will post pics of her workin later.

Just a couple of things, if you are going to be walking in make sure you bring a flashlight it gets very dark as there are no lights what so ever at that point in the parking lot or on the path to the beach.

Make sure to bring BUG SPRAY you never know if they will be biting or not.

If you need help bringing your equipment onto the beach just give a call and someone should be able to come out and get ya.

Or if you do not like the dark this might be the wrong time to watch and waiting for a day demo might be in order.  It will be a New Moon so there will only be starlight till you get to the beach.  Ken will probably have his generator going with plenty of light. Not that is a good thing, I find I do better in the dark with no lights at all.

Hope to see a number of you out there should be fun.

Happy Catching

Paul

The surf Rocket .  Rockes.. I must say.  Ken loaded up the area with chum.  all different locations.  Once that was done.  the guys to our left seemed to hook up.  he fought this fish for almost 2 hours and about300 yards of beach.  there were like 20 of us following him.  with me snapping pictures..lol  he managed to get it into the wash.  it was an easy 5'  looked like a brown shark..  guess the line slacked on a wave.  and he lost him.  Great time out there.  thanks for the lift Paul t^

Hope they do well  we'll hear i the Am..

ALso met Chris from the board. Great dude!! t^

S U R F R O C K E T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Yes it was a great night, I'm just getting home a little while ago. First I have to say; Rod, great dude and great family. Also met Eng5Lt,again great dude. Chris and Rod it was a pleasure meeting you both.Paul it was great to see you again as well. Since I have been here on this site I have met a great bunch of guys, NJSW ROCKS. When we do these big nights like this its hard for me to spend alot of time in one place. I am busy chumming it up and setting baits up and putting them out there for people. I enjoy every minute of it though. And tonight is what its all about. Great people, great times and fish.

I started by putting out a chum slick, again we flooded the surf with my famous bunkertinis. This time we did it right, about every half hour we would load up the surf. It wasn't long after we started our slick that a guy fishing just north of us,a few hundred feet or so hooked up. Eng5Lt informed me of the hook  up, so we walked over. After being thanked for my chum slick, I offered to pull the shark out of the surf for him. They had it in the wash at one point, but his buddys were leary about grabbing it. Me; I'm on it, couldn't wait to get my hands on this monster. So with our crew we followed him on his fight down the beach. And it was a fight, I have to admit I was very jealous, lol. But we were on it.After a 300 yard plus journy down the beach, which turned into a run at one point, we could finally see this shark in the breaker. It was every bit of 5 feet, probally pushing six feet. The shark finally started wearing out, and the dude on the rod was right there with him, tired. At this point the fight has been going on for atleast an hour and a half mabey even longer. I was in the wash waiting for it to come close enough to grab, it actually swam against my legs and as i went to grab it bink the line breaks. My feet were burried in the silty wash and it wasnt easy to walk especially with a big shark at your feet. The guy fighting it was beat, I'm not sure how the line broke, but the fight was great. Fighting a fish in the surf for two hours, you cant ask for more. Let me tell ya this thing faught.

After we lost the fish we headed back to our spot, and started chumming again. It wasn't long and we had two more bite offs. Now my rigs had 125# stainless toothy wire. Go figure. We also had a few bite offs before the first shark hook up. Paul being one of those bite offs. Then my buddy's wife Crystal said I got something. Again the fight was on. This time wasn't as long. She was using my rod, I was set up alot better the the guy before was. After about a half an hour I could see it in the closest breaker. So I maned up and went in and grabbed it. Talk about strong, one big muscle, lol. I dropped it once and then got it on the beach.  A 4 foot brown shark. Crystal did great,at one point this fish almost pulled her over on the beach. She was very happy with her catch, the smile on her face said it all. CRYSTAL GREAT JOB!!!!!! We took our pictures, YES  I kissed it and released it back into the surf. Paul and Chris will be posting pics. We had one more bite off after that, hung out for a bit, then headed out.At this point the tide had gone way out, we had a great high tide, but when it went out it went out, and fast too.

It was great to be out there with such great people. And as much as I wanted to hook up, it was even greater to put my friends on great fighting fish.

I will be heading back out tomorow, much calmer night. My time to fish, hopefully I can chum them in again. Fellas lets get these pics up, and thank you all for such a geat night.

ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK BROWN SHARK FISHING SURF ROCKET STYLE, JUST A GREAT TIME.  ROD YOU ARE THE MAN WITH THIS SITE, XOXOXOXO. AND YES HE SHOWED UP WITH A YORKI, COOL LIL DOG,LOL. I'm gonna get some sleep, talk more tomorow.

yes we are going to do it again. its a great time, even away from the fishing part, sitting around the fire, kids cooking smores and hot dogs. no-one gets roudy, there is no drama. i hope next time we can get more familys out there, and have a great night. all the kids got to touch the shark, and really be apart of the night. this is what its all about, family and friends enjoying the beach and each other. Al will be sending me more pics the kids took throught the night, and i will get them up here.the kids would like to do it again before they have to back to school, mabey in two weeks we will do it again.

sounds great rod.

I said i was going back out yesterday evening, and i did. I headed out about 6 pm, got on the beach and set myself up. I was waiting to meet Al and some other friends. Within ten minutes of being there I was hooked up. It was a give and take fight that lasted about 45 minutes. My friends showed up in the middle of the fight. There was a pretty decent crowed by this time around me, familys that had been there for a while. One lady said thats got to be a big striper, look at that pole kids. I told her its not a striper its a shark. Kids stay out of the water she said!!!! i was laughing, but did have my hands full. It faught hard, but I was expecting more, after watching the ones last night.I finally got him in the wash, pole in one hand shark in the other. Landed my first one. It is great action when the striper bite is slow,a must try for any surf caster. Any ways I hooked up again about an hour or two later faught that one for about an hour. It was too dark and i was too wet to get my phone out to get pics of that one, i was beat. not much sleep the last few days and the second one kicked my butt. here is a few pics of the first one, about 4 feet or so. the second was bigger,by mabey a foot or so.
