10 Things I learned in 2008

In no particular order...

- quality umbrella rigs, when weighted and trolled slowly, can be extremely effective, often when nothing else is.
- live bluefish, and bluefish strips, are truly the best fluke bait.
- The value of fishing early/late in the day cannot be overestimated.
- Shad are fun to catch when they blitz the inlet in the late summer.  look for big bass/weaks fdeeding on them.
- Use at least 4-5' of leader when fishing for stripers w/ livelined bunker.
- big seabass like killies.
- baitcasting reels are better than spinning.
-keep a log
- Barefoot rods are the best.

I learned I can troll a nine line spread on a 25 foot boat with a 9 1/2 foot beam if the spread is set by Capt Mike. Not one tangle all day with a lot of turns and shucking and jiving.

I have learned to make use of the old tried and true methods I used years ago and not to shun them for new glitzy things.  Most of the new stuff is just a version of the old anyway.

Who ever thought after spinning gear has been brought to new highs that I would ever go back to conventional. But I did...

With all the plugs and lures on the market today making my own still brings me great joy in knowing I can create something that will fool the wisest fish out there.

I also learned that by giving information freely has some big rewards like making new friendships and anchoring old ones.

I learned that if you get your left thumb near the table saw blade it will cut off the top of your thumb....did that a week ago today..ouch is an understatement...

I also learned what a great site I have found here @ NJSWF.

   ( that's my right thumb...lol)

I learned yet again that whatever the size limit is raised to on flukies I will catch my limit of shorties just 1/4 - 1/2" too short. They will be thick healthy fish and I will return them to the sea for the draggers to catch.

What I have learned in 2008!

1] The fluke speak to Capt. Joe. Ha! Ha! Ha! Capt Joe and his crew are the # 1 go to guys for fluke!!! 

2] Hyannis Massachusetts Have the biggest fluke consistently.

3] When Rod calls for the net don’t even bother it is sure to be a dog fish… LOL 

4] Year after year Bob Cole is a fluke machine.

5] Rotten hepatitis clams scare away junk fish and produce nice size sea bass. 

6] Black fishing is addicting and quite entertaining. 

7] Capt Jerry is the man for Black fish.

8] Fishing in Florida in February is awesome! 

9] A great crew makes for a great time! 

10] Most of all, there are a few good people still out there!!!

I also learned that my old fishing gear does still work, you can never have too much fishing stuff, you should fish whenever you can, 6oz of lead to the back of the head...will leave a mark and make you angry, getting mugged on the beach hasn't changed in years and occurs as often as being mugged in NYC, experimenting and trying new ways works with good results, any government agency that is remotely responsible for fishing regulations requires all of their employees to add 1+1 and not get 2!!

I leanred how to make my own rigs in 2008.  Learned that big baits catch fluke.  Smelts!!!!   Sea Bass love shrimp.  MAke sure you have the right hooks , right off the bat.  I wasted so much time one trip on the Dauntless in October.  Once I changed hooks, I had a good day.  Stupid of me....  LOL

I also learned not to hope too much for a trip.  You will get disappointed by the weather and seas.  I hope that chnges for next weekend.  The Voyager cancelled their trip for a January 1 departure.  Mine is January 9.  I hope it gets better.

But on a good note, I have one for 2009 already.   It may not mean anything to you, but it means a lot to me and brings back a lot of happy times.  I heard on The Grateful Dead Channel on XM Radio that The Grateful Dead is BACK!!!!  Two shows in Philadelphia, two shows in the Meadowlands and one in The Garden.  All happening in April and May.  A spring tour!!!!! "Get in the Groove and let the good times roll".......................  I'm a veteran show goer....
