« on: May 21, 2007, 10:18:50 PM »
Can anyone give me some help on the best place to park at Sandy Hook to do some surf fishing? I have not been there since I was a kid. I do some surf fishing on vacation in Cape May and realy enjoy it. Also what works better bait or lures, I would like to try for some blue and bass. Thanks for any help.

It really depends on where you want to fish as to where you should park.......if you are fishing the near mainland end park and either of the first two lots.....there you can get to the Ocean or Bay, if you want the tip go out to north beach....

As with anything what ou use depends on a varity of factors......had a charter out today working some blitzing Blues/Bass right off nother beach, the Surf fisherman switch from bait to plugs/spoons and began scoring until it stopped.......a good bunker chunk or clam will work very nicely......you just have to be prepared ;) ;)

I agree with Capt. Bob.  This time of year the fish are moving so fast you could be into blues and then 30 mins later nothing and switch baits and your into bass.  Right now I would recommend clams on a 8/0 circle hook with a slider for bass, for blues in the surf break out the metal lures anything you have will probably work.

If your looking for a good verity of lures at a reasonable price try Wal Mart.  If your not sure what to use pick a good Bait & Tackle shop and start asking questions.

I am sure the guys in this forum will share their favorates.  I was told to try the AVA-47 with a green tube (Thanks Ed) but have not caught anything on it yet.  I also like the blue and white Hopkins poppers they will work for bass as well.  It is so cool seeing a fish slam into a top water lure I never get tired of it.

I am usually at IBSP and the beaches close to Seaside Park. Ortley and Lavellette, if you get down this way give me a call I'm in the Contacts Forum.

Good Luck,

Paul

Ped,
I like the Ava also.  I have it in several different sizes.  The last time I was out the smaller Avas (17 and 27s) caught better than the large one (47).  Didn't much matter with the color of the tail, just the smaller size.  I'm assuming there was smaller bait in the water at the time, but I never did see any bait.

I have to agree on the smaller AVA's I will be picking up a few different sizes and colors before the weekend.  Capt. Ed mentioned them so I picked up two different color greens.  I love the way they cast.  I also have a number of Hopkins that I will be air brushing in different color patterns  I'll let you know how they work out.  If I have a chance I will take some pic's and post before I use them.
