Fireline for surf fishing

Does anyone use fireline or any type of braided line for surf fishing? Why or why not? Thanks for any help!!

Hi njdevil,

Call me old fashion but I like to stick with some of the old tried and true stuff.  I know fireline has been around for a while now but I like the good old Berkley Trilene either the XL or the XT.  I use light line to start off with, 12# test with 30# leaders colored either black, red or green that I color myself with magic markers.  Hey it works.

With that I use a slider sinker and a Gamakatsu circle hook in the range from 6/0 to 8/0. 

I know braided line is smaller in diameter but the cost factor is significant for me to look for lesser costing line that works.

There is a big difference in an $8.00 spool and a $32.00 spool the same length.

What can I say I'm a starving artist who likes to fish, but I have to fish economically.

Where do you surf fish?  I'm usually out either at IBSP, Ortley, or lavellette beaches and some times Seaside Park.  My usual hang out is somewhere down by the North Jetty of IBSP and I find myself working northward from there.

Although I have limited surf fishing time recently, I do use braid on my spinning outfits.  The price seems to be comparable to mono when you figure in the fact that it does not have to be replaced nearly as often as mono.  If you use enough backer (the old mono you had on the spool) you can get away with a 150 yard spool.  It's not too often that a fish will pull of that much line where you will get spooled.  The 150 yard spool should cost about $15.00 or so.

I feel that the braid casts better and you get a better hook up with it.  But that is only my opinion and you do have to watch you don't get cut. 

I think you would really have to use both and make a decision from there.  Some like braid, some don't.

I dont like Fire line, I use power pro and Ugly braid.. I dont think you can beat the sensitivity of braid.. To me it really makes a diffrence...And like irishAyes said its pretty comparable to Mono price wise..

I use PowerPro 20 on my Jetty Rods & PowerPro 30 on my bait rods.

I like the fact that it has no memory and doesn't twist up like mono will.

As far as cost goes, I fish one season with it, pull it off the reel and put it back on reversed and use the part of the line that hasn't seen water yet.

With a mono backing you only need to put 150 - 200 yards on a reel.
