Water Separator
« on: March 17, 2009, 01:51:12 PM »
My Evinrude manual says I donot have to replace the fuel filter and water separator for 300 hrs or 3 years. This year is my third season with this boat. What do some of you more experienced folks think. Should I replace them? Seems a long time to not replace these items

Thanks much
Bill

I drain mine after every tank and change it after every year.  Also Evinrude owner.  Unless you have a new motor, anything prior to the Ethonol in the fuel era, then yes that manual may be accurate.

at least keep spares on the boat and the tools to change them and make sure you can do it in a pinch

Change filters every year. As others have said, cheap insurance, expecially with the fuel they are putting into the tanks now a days.

yes, there is water and gas in that filter.  You want to empty it after every tank.

If it wasn't for all the ethanol in todays fuel, the normal would be to just change it after every season and not worry about it, but with todays gas problem, it forces you to take better caution.

The best thing to do is replace the spin on solid filter with a filter with a clear bowl at the bottom. You can then see if there is any water in your fuel and drain it from the clear bowl. No need to remove the filter, drain and reinstall.
