Hi All,

Well I am hearing some good grumblings from the park so I have to get out and check for myself.

If anyone else is venturing out my plan is to start at A10 and work south.  Bait if the day is most defiantly clams.  After the blow yesterday the clam beds probably took a good hit and the bass will be targeting them pretty heavily for a while.

the ocean was like a LAKE today..

Like Nick said the ocean was like a lake today.  It was great to look at but nothing to mention about the fishing.  The old holes of last year are all but vanished and new cuts and bars are going to be great explore but not on the weekends.  More on that later.

Started the day out over at Grumpys getting my local dose of Grumpisms and a couple dozen clams.  Headed to the beach as I really have not fished it this year so instead of going with my instincts I went with my feelings.  Well as it turns out my instincts would of been better listened to than my feelings. 

I started out fishing at A10 where I usually pull up to and do fairly well.  This year it looks like the hole has moved north a bit by 200 yards or go.  It seems like no one was home in the hole so I decided to make the move and head south a bit more looking at all the cuts and holes.

I started fishing just at the turn of the tide as everyone that was catching anything said the incoming was the best.  Well not today, but that was okay as I (and here comes the fudge factor) was trying out some new equipment I bought over the winter.  The new Tica 8' Dolphin surf rod worked great and I was able to throw light plugs with ease, but I have a couple dozen clams and can't wait to drown them.

I kept to my quest and headed south towards the inlet stopping at all the ols haunts of last year but again no one home.  I do have to say that there were plenty of birds working off shore diving on some good morsels way out of my reach or any body's reach for that matter.  There was another thing I did notice and that is I only saw 3 boats all day out there and they were all up on plane and not fishing.  I know it is way to early but I would of thought a beautiful Sunday as we had today that someone would be out wetting a line out there.

Oh well,  I continued south to the North jetty where there were a number of anglers throwing white jigs into the inlet but upon asking of any luck the answers were all the same no not today.  It was all good but I wished I could come back and even say I had on on and lost it at the wash but alas I can't do that. 

The water was getting warmer out front with a reading of almost 49 degrees and the water clear with very little floating weed at all.  I was surprised after Saturdays blow.  I did notice that there were clams struned all over the beach which tells me the clam beds have taken a goo hit as did the Mussels.

If you are going to venture out and try your luck clams would be the way to go for the next few days.  I will be trying to go out on Tuesday in the pre dawn and try where I should of started and that was out back in the flats ans shallows.

I am still waiting for my kayak to be completed so as of right now I am still land locked.  Once I can get out there I am hoping the reports will be a lot different.  The guys at Grumpys are heading up to the Raritan Bay tonight as they are all seeking that prize of the season that first Striper.  I will find out Monday how they did.

Oh yeah, I mentioned earlier snot on weekends.  Well the nitwits were out and it showed as the State Park Police were out in force with plenty to do.  As my day came to a close I pulled up to the A6 air pumps I noticed that one weekend warrior has pulled up almost parallel to the air lines coveting about 3 stations so I pulled in behind them and started to air up at the fourth and last station.  I kept my mouth shut and shortly another dimwit pulls up in front of him and they start to exchange pleasantries, well I thought this is going to be great entertainment while I fill up.  Well even this did not materialize as the first nitwit is finished and pulls away I noticed that the other guy is pulled in between 2 stations and using 2 hoses.  DUH, WTF is going on here.  No, I think I will stay away from the park on weekends already thank you.

So there you have it, my first all afternoon out of this season.  It was one hell of a day weather wise.  The fish did not cooperate but that is okay as the season is still in its infancy and I have a feeling it is going to be a great year.  If you are thinking of going to the park any time soon you will not be disappointed the park is beautiful the sand is still packed and the water warming nicely. 

So if you see the maroon colored Expedition flying the NJSWF flag come on over and say hi.  I am always looking for some good stimulating chit chat.  Lord knows the fish aren't offering any action yet

And Lord Egg Head, I would of settled for a couple cheese burgers out there today.

I'll be headin out tomorrow morning (if i can wake up).  Plan on hitting the end of incoming out front and then moving out back for the same.  Hopefully I'll have something to report.

I have not heard of anything going on of late.  I still would suggest clams cut into small strips and 2/0 or 3/0 hooks on a hi lo rig.  Or if you are going to use lures still one of the best would be the AVA 017 and one of the teasers you tied would be a good combo.  Remember to fish it real slow as the water is still cold out front.  If you are going to tr your luck out back small mombo minnows night be the key back there again fished real slow.

I am dying to get out myself but the honey do's are building up and she is checking the list twice, not good.

Got the skunk this morning.  But it sure was a nice day out there.  Water was smooth.  Wind was barely a breeze.

Good try Chris,  It is just the beginning.  At leasty that is what I keep telling my self.  The water oiut front is stiss bouncing all over the place so I guess the bulk of the fish are still off shore where the water temps are more stable.  Give it a while and I feel this is going to be a good year.
