SB of the Raritan 4/29
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:12:07 PM »
Decided to take a shot at the SB of the Raritan today as the forecast did not bode well for off shore blackfishing and my wife was playing cards this afternoon.

Decided to wet some nymphs at Ken Lockwood Gorge, which I did not get to last year because of the report of the road closing....to my surprise the south entrance to the "Gorge" was open up to Trestle Pool.

Fished for about an hour an a half in low and clear stream conditions with that section of the river to myself.......found that tying a 4X tippet is getting harder as I get older, but managed to get a #14 beaded prince nymph tied and fished in a pool where I caught and released a nice 10" rainbow and another brookie of the same size...... a 10" rainbow gives a great account of itself on a 5wt flyrod....both were released to give enjoyment to the next fisherman...left the stream relaxed.....that type of fishing is "contemplative" not competitive..solitary....must be what the yak fisherman feel like when they cruise the sedge islands with no one around t^.

Nice outing!  Nothing better than being out in nature with nothing else around.

Thanks for the report MGM.  It is great to be along and all you hear is the wind, a screech of an Osprey, and the lapping of the waves on the small hull.  Life is good. t^ grtn

The Gorge has got to be about the most beautiful stretch of the Raritan river.  You could just sit on a rock and be relaxed!
