Evinrude Repairs

Fellas,

My brother in law, Witches Bru, asked me to post a question to see if anyone has a how to or pic on the following:

Need to replace the steering control arm on a 1997 Evinrude, 115hp, 4-cylinder. What do I need to do?

Eek,, this could be a big one..  You may have to remove the power head.

I'd look into buying the oem Manual for that motor.. really a must have.

I sold mine with my boat..  a Must have

What is wrong with the arm? I have seen some rusted up ones but never had to replace one, yet.
I would think the powerhead has to come off for a start. Matt.

A great site indeed.  My fav is iboats.com  but learned you don't get to far with these guys if you don't own the service manual.. If you start a post. I have the manual but I don't understand...

You will get a lot of help.. if not most go un answered.

I purchase the manual for my Rude. and they helped me rebuild the whole Motor

Well, marineengine.com was a big help. Got a response right away from Andrew. I was finally able to remove the lower unit. Removed all the bolts holding the lower unit but had to disconnect the shift rod. All that was needed was to remove the hitch pin from the shifter control arm, push the arm in and the shift rod became disconnected. The lower unit need a little help but I got it off. Will be replacing the water punp and intake screens while I'm at it. Eveerything else is disconnected and I'm ready to disconnect the power head and remove the steering control arm.

good luck with the repair last time I was in that deep I was bustin bolts left and right and I had to switch from propane to acetylene if you know what I mean.

Well....got the lower unit off...finally! Couldn't figure out how to release the shifter arm (under the carb)...hard to see but finally realized I had to remove the hitch pin. All the wires, etc are removed. Now all I have to do is remove all the bolts attached to the powerhead and start working on removing the steering arm assembly.
Attached is a picture of that nasty old "Evinrusted" part!
