Key to Fluking
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:39:53 AM »
Just thought I would throw this out, hopefully it helps somebody.

Had a young group of gentlement out today with limited Fluking Experience.....gave them some verbal instruction at the dock and then on our first couple drifts showed them what needed  to be done.

The Key is:
 MOVEMENT OF THE BAIT/BUCKTAIL

KEEPING REEL IN FREE SPOOL WITH THUMB ON IT TO DROP BACK WHEN YOU FEEL THE BITE

After three or four drifts these boys were fishing like pros and rods were bent all the time.

One spot we were at the boys were pulling up fish after fish, while the guys next to us, who was dead sticking 3 lines was doing nothing.

He yelled over "Hey what bait are you using?" Yelled back, movement is the key pick up a rod and fish.  He didn't like that answer and motored away after giving me a dirty look, without hooking a fish I might add.

We could fill pages on what bait, rig, bucktail, etc should be used but Movement and feel are
most important. TT^

But Chartruse Gulp with a White bucktail and a Spearing have been killing the FLuke for us. slt

Great info! I'll add a couple:

1. Buy a hook sharpener and use it---often.  Mussells beds and rocks really dull hooks fast.

2.  Shorten your leader when the current is humping hard.

3.  Use a sliding sinker harness and a barrel swivel not a thee way swivel.  You'll get better feel on the bait and when you do drop back, the fish never feel the weight.

4. Use the fresh bait you can get, ie bluefish or robbin strips.

Thanks Bob! When you say keep the reel in free spool with your thumb on it, I assume you mean for a conventional. I use spinning gear for fluke so what is the equivalent? I usually just pop the bail open or pull out some drag when I need to drop back a bit.
