Striped Bass tactics
« on: June 09, 2009, 02:32:13 PM »
Are their any other tactics I should be employing at this time of year for stripers?  I have been live lining and trolling with some success, but have not been getting into the fish like we are hearing others are.

Is there a better time of day/night to target?  Is tide a factor for inshore fishing?

To my knowledge the fish are spread over a great area right now from L.I. to A.C.-where would be the preferred spot to target the big boys be? (not specifically your hotspot of course)

I'm sure that some of you veterans have it down to a science after years of chasing the cows on their migration North in the spring.  Any tips would be appreciated.

Dave

The best bite for bass is probably an hour or so before and the hour after sunrise or sunset...the magic hours.  Stripers by nature are more nocturnal feeders.  Of course that doesn't mean they won't eat when the opportunity is present.  Moving water is probably the best time to fish no either tides as well.

Whether boat fishing or fishing from shore, best places to start are where the bait is...it's like finding a fat guy at a buffet ;D!  If you don't have any luck with fish on the bait, next try fishing structure.  Deeper holes or channels, ledges, drop offs, points, etc...  From the boat you have all the electronics, too, most likely, that will help you identify this and possible mark some fish.

You may have to try different baits as well or the way you are presenting the bait.  Cut bunker or bunker heads, may work better than whole or livelined bunker at any given time.  You really just need to experiment.

Best thing you can do is just fish.  You can't always have the right or perfect conditions and plenty of fish are caught in the absolute opposite of perfect tides, moon, weather, etc...  Even if you aren't catching, you can still learn and find places that you can go back to and try another day.  Fishing only gets better the more you do it.  It's really a gamble, all the time.

I don't have any secret spots and since I don't boat fish, I can't help you out with areas.

Good luck.  I am sure the more you fish, the more you will catch and find your own niche for limiting out.  Another good idea, might be to charter or hop on an open boat.  Any of the Captains and Crew are pro's and even from one trip you can learn a lot of tactics that you can then employ on your own boat.

You mentioned you have been live lining and trolling so your boat should have a good recorder. Fish the pods and the marks,These are no secrets.Bait fishing and trolling are unigue.
If you think you have the fish figured out:Think again.Things change daily. Good Luck   t^

It seems like it's been a little hit or miss this year.

I think were actually having a spring instead of going right into summer. Water temps are a bit lower...

Like Pfishinggruven says...just keep at it.

The boat guys have their own tactics but as a long time surf fisherman  the things I look for are the change in the tides, bait fish if they around, a little rough water (especially if it is out of the north east), and as far as the choice of bait would be what ever is running at the time.  right now after a strong storm like we had this morning I would probably go with the calms as when I go tomorrow I can bet to fine broken shells all over the beach.  I would also bring along bunker to cut in strips this time of year for chunking in the cuts and right behind the cuts.

This is why I carry so many rods when I go to the beach.  You never know what to expect.  My rods range from a small 7' rod for throwing small plugs into bait pods as they travel up or down the beach to the longer 11' conventional combos to get the heavier baits out and heavier weights to keep them there.

1) watch your tides
2) watch the winds
3) match the hatch so to speak
4) watch the beach conditions (learn to read the beach)
5) be flexible in your choices of outfits
6) and the most important one, be patient
7) above all have fun doing what you love

Happy Catching
