Hunter 2, mixed bag, Asbury June 27 evening
« on: June 28, 2009, 10:03:43 AM »
Left the Marina in Keyport around 4pm. I had my brother John and friend mike on the boat. The weather and conditions were good. We made the run down to the shrewsberry rocks with the intention of finding some Bunker pods and doing some live lining. At the rocks, I did not see any Bunker so I set them up with some Fluke rigs and did some drifting. I was busy rigging up a pole for myself and getting things in order when Johns pole was bent in half. As he got the fish to the surface we all said HOLY SH!T cfzd cfzd..  It was the biggest Fluke any of us have ever seen.  I had my smaller shallow depth net in my hands and net the Fluke. In all the excitement as I was raising the fish up in the net, I think John pulled the rod tip up and the Flukes head came out of the net. It started floundering about and the leader line broke. rgmn  Out of the net it came and into the water it went. The Fluke was upside down on the surface of the water for a second or two and Mike was trying to get hold of it but could not get a good grip on it.  The monster swam back down to the bottom with a new bucktail in its lip. I fished the area for around an hour more picking up plenty of Sea Bass and Mike had a 10 pound blue devour a sea Bass he was reeling in.
I decided to look for Bunker down in Asbury and we found them along with a small fleet of boats chasing them around. We snagged around 8 Bunker and I set John up with a live line rig. As I was rigging myself up John hooked up with a nice Striper and did a nice job bringing it to the boat. I got the Big net out of the cabin and netted his personal best 25 pound 39" Striper. We did not catch any more striper's but had a few runoffs and Bluefish bites. Around 10:30pm we made the long run back to Keyport and called it a night.  I cant stop thinking about that monster fluke. nosmly  And I am going to throw away that small net.

Nice trip Eddie.

Yeah, get rid of that small net. Only leads to heart aches when you miss a big fish like that.  :P

I will go to the rocks in a few days and see if I can retrieve your bucktail from that fluke's mouth.  TT^

Congrats to John on his PB striper.

whs   I often see customers buying nets that are too small and I always suggest they go bigger for that reason.

Way to go on the striper! t^
